Miss Ozma goes to Washington

Fables 94 begins the "Rose Red" arc, but I've chosen to share four pages focusing on developments involving some of the other characters.

As you might recall, three issues ago, the series left off at a cliffhanger where Ozma had just teleported the Blue Fairy to the Farm.



As sheriff, Beast is of course obligated to protect Geppetto, who did after all sign the General Amnesty. Beast convinces the Blue Fairy to give him ten minutes to talk her out of her vengeance.





Beast and the Blue Fairy come to a deal, and she teleports out of there, presumably returning to the Homelands.



Makes you wonder, would Bigby have been willing to go to such lengths for Geppetto back when he was sheriff?

Yeah, Frau is sooooooo coming back to put someone in her place.

You think so? What I mean was "She's got guts" or some other positive, assertive quality. The head witch of the Fables has to be able to play power games, and right now, it looks like Ozma's handling herself nicely.

I think she is picking unnecessary fights. I can get that Geppetto is dangerious but this seemed way too open and blunt about it. I think Cole will save her, but I think she will be stupid underestimate him, and I can see Cole wanting Frau back.

I like Ozma for the drama, but I both want, and realistically think Frau will come back and reclaim her spot. I also think Ozma was quick to jump into the chair. Another tension she caused quickly.

Hm, I see what you mean. Still, I think Frau's pretty busy with...whatever shes doing right now. I think I would prefer it if Ozma makes some sort of blunder, learns some humility, and becomes a better leader for it.

I don't know if Ozma was causing tension by taking Frau's spot, because I think she's right: it's time for a new witch to take charge. It's not as if Frau is cast aside, she has her own projects now...I would love it if Frau came back and served as an emissary or some other powerful role that wouldn't compete with Ozma.

I would love for Ozma to stick around and be an effective leader, but I fear that she has "firey death because she bit off more than an she can chew" written all over her. I really hope that Bill doesn't go that way (just like I fear for Beauty because right now she seems in a possible "will die due to Apocalypse Baby" scenario), though!

I don't see Bill doing that, he seems a much better writer than to just "punish" his female characters for being assertive/pregnant.

And what was that about Beauty again? I don't follow the books, so the whole "Apocalypse Baby" comment just whooshed over my head.

Heh, I like that point King Cole makes about failure.

Willingham isn't great with dialogue by any means, but when he wants to make a point he can do it very well.

Not only is Ozma a really interesting character, but I think Witches and now certainly this issue of Rose Red has done a great service to King Cole. He's certainly a lot more competent and interesting than he was back when the series began (I still hope that he remains a merry old soul, though).

I think its always been hinted that Cole knew more then he let on since the beginning.

Very true, and Arabian Nights (and Days) did a good job of highlighting that. As did his little story in 1001 Nights of Snowfall. But these past few issues are by far the most interesting we've seen him in the series.
