Why Marko Djurdjevic is the best.

In my previous post about C2E2 news, I posted a news bit about a giant Avengers cover drawn by Djurdjevic that would be broken up into (I think) nine parts.  And here it is.

So left to right:  the villains, the Avengers Academy teachers and characters, the New Avengers, the Avengers, the Secret Avengers, and the Young Avengers.

Looks like Iron Fist and Dr. Strange will be returning to the fold.

I wonder at the choices of villains.  There's Kang, Ultron, Dr. Doom, Loki, Baron Zemo,  the Hood, the Wrecking Crew, and somebody who could either be the Owl or Mr. Hyde.

Kang and Zemo have important stories coming up (Kang in Avengers, Zemo in Captain America), so does this signal appearances by the others (Hyde/Owl in particular is a random choice if not).

I'm sure Hyde is connected to the Young Avengers. He was the only villain they battled back in their original mini along with Kang.

Most people had guessed he was, based on a solicit saying that a Dark Avenger would be joining one of the new teams.

Zemo's returning to face off with New Cap and Falcon in the next arc of Brubaker's Captain America.

That's not O'Grady's armor though. The return of Scott Lang, maybe?

I'm guessing they just give him the traditional outfit if they want him to play the part.

This series starts in May and there's not really any obvious place where Scott would be brought back in the intervening period; plus, Brubaker's Reborn mini included a scene of O'Grady helping Bucky escape from the Thunderbolts, asking that Bucky keep that in mind for the future. Given that there's now an Ant-Man on Brubaker's team, seems like that was setup.

My only two gripes are

a) I would have gone with the Thunderbolts instead of the Villains, as the new Thunderbolts under Luke Cage would tie in a lot more with the whole "These are all of the teams associated with the Avengers going into the Heroic Age"

b) no Sharon Carter in the Secret Avengers. I was hoping she would have a large part to play after we found out she'd be on the team (earlier today). But I guess she might just be supporting.

Sharon not being there was one of the first things I noticed apart from how pretty the piece is overall. Interesting idea you have, that it means she's just a supporting cast member.

I wonder if that's the same for Tigra and the other Avengers Academy instructors apart from Hank and the guy with the blue cape (whom I don't recognize, thus can't name).

Djurdjevic's stuff is just gorgeous in general, but I reeeeally love how he draws Loki. He just makes him look so tricksy and evil.

I want to get a huge poster of this and tape it on the ceiling so I can stare at the pretty every night before I go to sleep.

Lovely work! I wouldn't mind it as a poster either.

Hazmat and Finesse look better here (much more, for the former) than they have on the "I am in Avengers Academy" teasers.

But... but none of the women are contorting themselves to thrust sexily at the camera. They all look strong, determined and heroic! (Except for Jess, who as neuhallidae notes, is hilariously meh about all this). Ten women and not one of them looks anything but heroic and cool! MY WORLD IS ALL A-KILTER.

In other news, that Wasp costume really does work for Hank, headsock and everything.

Correction: eleven women: Hazmat, Finesse, Veil, Mockingbird, Ms. Marvel, Jewel, Spider-Woman, Valkyrie, Black Widow, Hawkeye II (is she going to get a different name, or timeshare; the latter isn't unprecedented), Stature.

More so in the DCU than 616. Though the YA don't actually particularly use their code names anyway, so it'd work better with them than most, I guess.

Or she could take Ronin, since no one's using it at the moment. I'd hate to lose the shades, but a proper shirt might be worth the tradeoff.

There are a couple of other women who, from what we know, will be significant characters in the series who aren't on this image either; Tigra in Avengers Academy, Maria Hill in Avengers, Victoria Hand in New Avengers (Steve's generous with the second chances, it seems), and Sharon Carter in Secret Avengers.

Maybe Steve's entranced by her punk-y red highlights and their incongruous placement on such a professional and rigidly authoritarian woman. It's the only explanation I can come up with for why I like her so much, anyway.
