I think it's basically that the original X-Force was a Kyle/Yost creation, it has fulfilled its function with "Second Coming", hence they want it to clearly demarcate the different incarnations. Plus, new #1s are always a plus in the sales department.

The former makes sense to me, and, as for the latter, I've generally made a policy of not caring how books are marketed/relaunched, for the most part; so long as it helps them produce more (assuming I like the product), I'm fine with it.

I agree with you, though; X-Force/X-23 seems a likely exchange for me as well.
