So some people were talking about old Max who I loved a lot. So I decided I'd post some scans mainly Max-centric from Formerly Known as the Justice League.

From Formerly Known as the Justice League #1 Max wants to get the old team together so the first one he tracks down that lovable robot L-Ron.

Max and L-Ron manage to convince, bribe, and manipulate them all into joining with Mary Marvel in her brothers place.

In Formerly Known as the Justice League #2 all the gangs together. Aw.

In Formerly Known as the Justice League #3 the team, except Max, L-Ron and Sue, gets kidnapped so Sue goes on a website to try to figure out who did it...

In Formerly Known as the Justice League #4 The team are taken to a fighting ring where Mary beats Captain Atom within an inch of his life, but they all break out. What could happen next you ask? Not an alien invasion certainly...

In Formerly Known as the Justice League #5 Manga Khan sends his robot J-Lo to go get L-Ron and bring him back. But they do have something to offer them in return...

There is always someone watching

I do like how the JLI seems to make Batman happy :)

Next in Formerly Known as the Justice League #6 first more batman funnies

Then Ted and Booster fight, and Booster goes to hit Ted who moves out of the way and so he hits a robot who knocks the rest of Manga Khan's robots down like dominoes...

And they all lived happily ever after? . . . :(

So wonderful, and then they have to have Meltzer ruin everything, like a kid kicking over a sand castle. Screaming "It wasn't a castle! You couldn't live in it! It was ALL LIES!" and laughing.

That's what IDENTITY CRISIS was to me.

Also, he enjoys not enjoying anything. Because he's Batman.

MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAX

If there was an emoticon between a grin and a sorrowful weep, I'd be emoticonnng it SO hard right now.

Seriously, how? How could people just ruin a character like this? What joyless people really think he's better off as an eeeeeeeeeevil mastermind with X-TREME mind control powers?

Here's a question: If Max wiped himself of all evil deeds, in addition to the public, would he be a viable character again?

The main reason they're veeeeeery insistent that Max is super-evil-bad now is Wonder Woman.

Diana can not be wrong to have snapped Max's neck, it's too major and drastic an action and she's too important a character for the DCU. I think that's why they're taking him out for another whirl, to try and hammer in that it was okay for her to have done so because holy crap, look how evil he is!

I am in love with Kevin Maguire's ability to draw facial expressions so well.

But it's also hilarious that you don't see Batman's face at all in these scans.

Keven Maguire could draw an entire issue of nothing but talking heads, and it would be more dynamic, fun, and entertaining than half the comics on the stands right now.

He doesn't even exaggerate features like in anime, his drawings are all very lifelike!

Nice touch how you can't see Batman's face. Even though he is (totally not) cracking jokes he still maintains a strange, shadowy aloofness from the other characters. FUN. Must buy this.

However, does anyone have the scene where Boostle hide the chocos and J'onn finds out? Even though he's barely in it, that's probably my favourite Max scene.

I think my favorite Max scene from Superbuddies is when he's talking about beating up that one guy and Sue tells him he hits like a girl and after her comment sinks in the panel of Max being all "I DO NOT HIT LIKE A GIRL" is like... my favorite thing ever and I don't really know why.

In my own little world (as Bob Ross of painting fame would say) this is still the JLI and everything from Identity Crisis on never happened. I just loved these books (and "I Can't Believe It's Not the Justice League" was printed after Identity Crisis making the comparison all the more obvious..and sad).

Observations:
1. One of my pet theories about Countdown is that the writers on that series (McKeever, Beechan, Bedard, Palmiotti and Grey) a couple of which openly said they didn't know much about Mary Marvel only used THIS portrayal (which Giffen admitted was a caricature) of a naive ditz who doesn't even know J'onn is "really a Martian" despite her twin being in the JLI for years as a reference point for how they (horribly) wrote her and not the Power of Shazam series (where Mary was the most calm and level headed Marvel). It would also explain the high level of sexualization of the underage Mary in Countdown since Booster and Guy Gardner were constantly hitting on her and/or making inappropriate comments in this series (something that rarely happened when she interacted with super-heroes elsewhere).

2. I wish Batman was written more like this in his own books (as a man with a weird sense of humor) instead of as a jerk. And I wish it was highlighted more how different he is with this group (lighthearted like the original Robin) than he is with the "Big 7" JLA. Some personalities bring out the best in him.

3.Also I wish Kevin Maguire was as fast as Bagley. Nobody does facial expressions like him.

4. I miss Sue. She was cool. There was no one in the DCU like her (how many other non-powered spouses of C-List heroes were honorary members of the League - not even Iris or Lois have that honor).

LOVED this book.

My personal theory was that Robot-Max tried to clone himself a human body, and things went TERRIBLY WRONG. Therefore you can have EBIL Max and good cyborg Max in the same universe.

My personal theory is that shortly after the Super Buddies broke up, Max contacted Manga Khan again and agreed to work for him as an interstellar salesman in exchange for Manga restoring his human body. In the meantime, Dreamslayer came back again, masquerading as Max, and that was whom Wonder Woman "killed." Of course, he didn't really die from that, but instead, the Silver Sorceress will return from the dead as well to stop him. (Possibly teamed up with the real Max.) That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

This and its sequel were great miniseries though, and I'm sorry they didn't continue publishing them. Was there any reason they couldn't have kept putting out these miniseries periodically? On the plus side, I am glad that Justice League: Generation Lost is coming out, hopefully soon.

You know, it IS possible that the current Max actually IS innocent of the crimes that he was accused of. I mean, he still seems to THINK of himself as the relatively decent guy he is here, and there are certainly enough mindworms and whatnot infesting the DCU that he could've been doing it against his will. I'm just sayin'.
