HELLBLAZER #269

On sale JULY 21 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • MATURE READERS
Written by by PETER MILLIGAN • art by GIUSEPPE CAMUNCOLI & STEFANO LANDINI • Cover by SIMON BISLEY
John Constantine is going insane, and he’s crazy enough to summon the only person he thinks might offer help: Shade the Changing Man. But Shade is not the gentle soul he once was – he’s desperate and dangerous. In fact, Shade’s harboring a nasty grudge and has more problems than Constantine – if that’s even possible.

I haven't been able to read the Shade the Changing Man, what's it about? And is this another part of the DCU-side of Vertigo drifting back into the Hellblazer comics?

X-FILES/30 DAYS OF NIGHT #1

On sale JULY 14 • 1 of 6 • 32 pg, FC, $3.99 US • MATURE READERS
Written by STEVE NILES & ADAM JONES • Art by TOM MANDRAKE • Cover A by ANDREA SORRENTINO • X-FILES Cover B by TOM MANDRAKE • 30 DAYS OF NIGHT Cover C by SAM KIETH
Two of the most popular horror properties of the last two decades collide in this harrowing 6-issue adventure of epic proportions! Co-writers Steve Niles (writer and co-creator of 30 Days of Night) and rockstar-turned-writer Adam Jones (the band Tool) team with the amazing, moody artistry of industry legend Tom Mandrake (THE SPECTRE, BATMAN) to unleash the ultimate comic culture crossover!
When evidence of a possible cannibal killer in Wainright, Alaska, draws the attention of the FBI, Agents Mulder and Scully draw the less-than-glamorous assignment. But all is not as it seems once the agents are on the ground. Not only has the long seasonal darkness begun to fall, but there’s something unnatural about a few of the locals. And what does a chilling, mysterious black ship have to do with the murders? Find out here! Co-published with IDW.
Retailers please note: This issue will ship with three covers. See the Previews Order Form for more information.

Hm, I guess that a 30 Nights of Night comic was kind of due I suppose, now that Niles seems to be douing a lot of work for DC, for example he did that neat Spectre short on the Crisis on Two Earths DVD. I think that the X-Files crossover does kind of make sense, what with vampires having a conspiracy to keep themselves secret and all. At least in the second series they had, I don't know about what happened after that.

The idea of a 30 Days of Night/X-Files crossover seems decent enough but the cover turns me off. All the sketchy art the series is known for in the background with a photo realistic Mulder and Scully. It just doesn't look right.

Wait...when did DC pick up the X-Files licence? Or, if they've had it for a while, when was the last time they did anything with it?

I think X-Files is one of those properties that always has a fanbase dedicated enough to keep the property afloat, but quiet enough that you can't point them out.

There was a graphic novel tie-in with the recent movie. I can't remember if it was DC or not who did that.

... There was a recent movie?

I'm way more out of the loop than I thought.

I was more a fan of the monster of the week episodes than the overall conspiracy stuff anyways.

So did I...and this was before the mythology became convoluted and self-contradictory. By the time I stopped watching the MotW were the only ones worth watching.

I think that described the majority of the casual watchers.

I loved their monsters, con sarnit.

Shade the Changing Man, in all his incarnations, is weird.

Also, awesome. And the best run was written by Milligan.

His was the only run as far as the SHADE meant here. Fleischer and Ditko's isn't at all the same guy.

Shade has been a major part of Vertigo almost as long as JC himself, so no.

As for what it's about...that would take longer to explain than it would to read the comic, unfortunately. It's about a lot of things. At its core though, it's the story of a mad poet and the woman he loves, then loses to death, then gains again.

According to Peter Milligan SHADE is about the main character's hair.

Which era X-Files, I wonder? That said, I pretty much loved it all. Season 8 is one of my top seasons and I was so annoyed Doggett and Reyes didn't get a single mention in I want to Believe.

X-Files?

Why not something more relevant, like BPRD?

With X-Files it'd be a true horror story.

With BPRD, it's be a horror story combined with a Curbstomp.
