Beasts of Burden getting Hellboy crossover.



Dorkin joked that, when Allie mentioned the possibility of a crossover with Hellboy, "I was disappointed, because I was really pulling for Batman." "He'd make much more sense. He sells a lot more comics than Hellboy does. I had to Google what Hellboy was, after we heard about this. Mike, uh, I don't know how to pronounce his last name; he had this idea that our book could help his out a little bit. Because apparently his book is struggling. And, you know, our book launched out of the gate with Mark Millar numbers - meaning that I'm lying about them. So, you know, he begged Scott to do this crossover. Jill and I said, what the hell, let's give this kid a break.

"I was pretty knocked out," Dorkin said, turning off his characteristic humor for a more truthful answer. "Obviously, [this was] not something I expected, and it was very flattering, and also something I was not sure would make sense. I gave it some thought - we were both obviously interested in the idea, for various reasons, some creative, some pragmatic. I'm a big Hellboy fan. I was pretty overwhelmed. Mike just basically gave us his blessing to use the character. That means a lot to us. And hopefully we'll do right by everybody - by his character, by his readers, and by our readers. Make it a neat comic book worth three bucks. Still trying to work Batman in there, though - apparently I have to get permission from DC or something?"





I am psyched about this like y'all have no goddamn idea. I think it would have been badass if they could have somehow fused in both the artists' styles, but I have full confidence that Thompson is nonetheless gonna pull out something amazing.

Oh this is SO COOL on unheralded levels. That fact that it's not too hard to get their universes to mingle. And again, much love for all of the little character details, and we find out of Big Red keeps some kibble in one of his pouches.

This is delightful. I am delighted.

I'm gonna get to see Jill Thompson at the Comic Expo this weekend, maybe I can talk to her about this! Instead of, y'know, standing in front of her table like a stump for a couple minutes before whispering "sign please. thank you" and then scurrying into the safety of the shadows. Like I usually do.

My bookshelf is full of comics signed by people who were looking at me funny and probably wondering if I was okay.

This is pretty awesome and all, but I do have to wonder just how they're going to pull this off. I mean, yes, they're both defenders against supernatural beings, so their worlds would mesh pretty well, but despite the off-hand comment about 'talking dogs', I was under the impression that the Beasts weren't supposed to be particularly unusual animals at all, right? There's the whole 'animal society' thing going on - amongst themselves, they have a common language and culture and so forth, but to US, they're just regular dogs and cats going about their business. So just how is this whole Hellboy team-up going to work? I mean, I could be wrong, but I've never seen any particular signs of Hellboy being Dr. Dolittle. He doesn't speak Animalese. They'll be going 'Holy crap, it's Hellboy! WATCH OUT! There's a tide of hideous angry ghosts of drowned gerbils streaming out of the storm tunnels! They're out to rend our tender flesh! Only we can see them! DO SOMETHING! We'll tell you where to shoot!', and he'll be seeing a bunch of pets running around frantically going 'YIP YIP YAP YAP YARP YORP WOOF WURRF WOOF GRRR MEWW EEK-EEK!', and he'll go 'huh. That's weird,' and toss 'em the remains of his roast beef sandwich and move along.

Au contraire, supernatural sorts can understand the Burden pets perfectly fine. The undead human in the issue I posted the last page of, for example, was like "Huh. Talking dogs. Cool. Oh, wait, I've heard of you guys. Wise dogs, right? Uncool."

A zombie may be in a different category of perception, though. Hellboy may be a demon, but he's a LIVE demon, and as far as I know, he doesn't have any particular supernatural powers or specialized knowledge of the sort that would allow him to talk to animals. I could be wrong, but...

As we've never seen Hellboy interact with Wise Dogs, it's wide open IMHO.

It's entirely possible it'll a gift that THEY will choose to share with HIM, and his being a demon will make it possible in the first place.

And I'm guessing magical peeps can understand the dogs. The litch understood them, as did the witches (Who chatted with their cats)

Well, yes, but the undead aside (who knows what THEY can comprehend), witches (at least, stereotypical ones) are SUPPOSED to be able to talk to cats. That's one of their specific powers - they communicate with their cat familiars. That doesn't necessarily include all magical types - I mean, if all the Dark Horse mystics and magicians and boogeymen have been able to talk to animals all along, then why haven't we seen any trace of such an ability thusfar?
