The Immortals

Four scans apiece from Hercules: Fall of an Avenger #2 and Sif #1.

In Fall of an Avenger, Athena and Apollo's champions (plus the champions of their allies) duke it out; Athena's people win, but both sides are annoyed by the bosses.  Amadeus gets the help of Phobos to force Pluto to let him into Hades (by threatening Pluto with sickeningly cute visions):

Next day at Olympus Group, Athena finds that Amadeus has taken the job as CEO, and that he plans to use the Group's resources to try to find Hercules.

Meanwhile, in the second story, Venus and Namora continue their world tour of Hercules' holdings, and come across the Lethe Children's Hospital, which, it turns out, is an orphanage/hospital for the children of monsters.  The hospital head explains the history of the place.

They obviously don't make any money doing this.  They then visit the hospital ward, where all the terminally ill monster-kids live:

Venus decides to fudge the books on this place, and says she'll visit with the kids in his place, since she's immortal too.

Over in the one-shot Sif, written by Matt Fraction's wife Kelly DeConnick (also a writer/translator, apparently), Sif gets a visit from Beta Ray Bill and his new girlfriend/sole fellow Korbinite, Ti Asha Ra (lucky that the one Korbinite Galactus resurrected turned out to be someone he could get along with - otherwise it would have been like poor Ruebert from that old Dilbert comic strip).  They need someone to help them reclaim their sentient spaceship from pirates who have taken it over and infected it with a bioweapon; Bill was looking for Thor, but Sif volunteers since he's not around.  The villains are a Borg-esque collective who want to unify the whole universe, so their weapon is mind control, conveniently similar to Sif's recent experience with Loki.  Here, she faces off with the head-villain:

She destroys their main generator-thing, and saves the day.

Minette's not a minotaur.

Or maybe she is, and the extra legs and human head are part of her terminal condition.

OMG! My own soap box!!! XD

Alas, on contrary to popular belief, Minotaur is not a race but a name of one individual, who got offed by Theseus, therefore, didn't have any children. There weren't many Minotaurs running around, just one. His mom sexed-up a bull, that doesn't happen as often as people suspect but more often then they hope for.

To be honest, I don't think I've ever seen a popular belief that the Minotaur was a race (Even Wonder Woman's Ferdinand is noted as being a Kythotaur, since he's not from Minos)

But even then, why does getting killed by Theseus mean he didn't have kids beforehand? He had the Athenian maidens offerings every nine years after all.

It was generally understood that the maidens were killed and eaten.

yes, and there's only one Pegasus (which is a proper noun), which does not stop lots of winged horses from existing in the collective imagination.

Just going by Ovid, she could fit, but her lower half doesn't even look bovine, thanks to that tail. Chalk it up to a term mistake and assume they meant centaur?

If they had only given her split hooves and a bovine body. I'm going to go with a lack of communication between the art people and the script people.

Why Pluto? If that's Persephone, shouldn't he be Hades? Or, the other way around, if he's Pluto, shouldn't she be Proserpina?

Soapboxing aside, I want a puppy Cerberus :D

The only reason Pluto goes by Pluto is to lower confusion over Hades the place and Hades the person. So there's no reason for Persephone to change, except maybe in solidarity with her husband.

I join in the earlier Greek mythology NERDRAGE. And raise them the idea that there were no female Centaurs either.

Also I would much like to see Pan in big comics.... Then again they'd probably make him pretty.

Ovid would disagree that there were no female centaurs, given that he wrote of Hylonome and Philostratus the Elder also wrote of the Kentaurides

"How beautiful the Centaurides are, even where they are horses; for some grow out of white mares, others are attached to chestnut mares, and the coats of others are dappled, but they glisten like those of horses that are well cared for. There is also a white female Centaur that grows out of a black mare, and the very opposition of the colours helps to produce the united beauty of the whole."

Hot DAMN, it's Persephone! And looking suitably dread, too! I'd given up on ever seeing her in any adaptation ever! It's like she stole her husband's helm and has been wearing it for the last century or so.

That makes up for the namesmush and the totally-not-a-minotaur girl in my book. Only in my book, though; I like Persephone, and Hades/Persephone is kind of OTP.

I know, I know, this is SD so it's never only me, but I am delighted someone else is a Hades/Persephone OTP. I've been shipping Hades/Persephone since I read their story in grade 4 (I even wrote a Kingdom Hearts fic in which she makes an appearance, I love them that much).

BUT if you plan on writing a Hades/Persephone fic for KH I would so read it!

It's like she stole her husband's helm and has been wearing it for the last century or so.

Haha, that took me a minute.

For a long time, the thing that made me saddest in Rucka's Wondy run was that Hades got killed off and replaced by Ares without so much as a namecheck for Persephone. And after Perez even wrote her as an ally of the Patrons! (She gets, like, three panels in his whole run, but that's three more panels than she gets anywhere else ever.)

Man, I totally forgot to pick up Sif. Gotta remember to put things on my pull!

Mythological inaccuracies and the adorableness of puppy!Cerberus aside, I continue to be pleased and a little awed by the friendship of Venus and Namora. They're just... women, being friends, having each other's backs and accomplishing stuff together and being a fun little superhero team. Or, subteam, I guess? Duo? Whatever, the important thing is, VanPak are writing it like it was perfectly normal and obvious and not any different from Cap and Clint or Barry and Hal or Ben and Reed. I don't mind telling y'all I love them a little for it.

Paul Tobin was a Marvel Adventures writer, right? There were some decent female friendships there. Glad to see more of it.

The Herc cast is great, though, I applaud their ability to write a womanizing hero and still give the female characters agency and, well, character.

Yup, I'm an idiot.

Though actually, the credit really should go to Parker, since it first struck me in AoA #3 when Namora's angsting about her daughter and being mildly suicidal with the mine tanker.
