Kate Beaton takes on "The Great Gatsby".

Yeah. One of my favorite webcomic writers takes on one of my favorite novels -- you can see the whole thing here.

East Eggers vs. West Eggers:

I refuse to read the comic. Not that I don't like it, but I'm still working through the archives of another awesome comic and I don't want to overload my plate.

I honestly think that as a whole, the Gatsby comics are my new favorite. And I have a lot of favorites, haha.

It's the upturned clawed hand in the last panel and the super serious face that really makes this for me.

Did anyone else think Nick was gay for Gatsby?

I've barely read the book and I think Nick is gay for Gatsby.

I read the book twice in high school, and I honestly never picked up on the homoerotic subtext between Nick and Gatsby.

Having said that, it *was* a private school, and they would never have mentioned that in class anyway.

But I'm starting to think I missed out. Apparently there's a scene where the two are getting dressed after-the-fact? Or sex in an elevator? It's been years since I read it last.

I recall that Nick goes on and on about Gatsby, nearly obsessively. His personality, his looks, that chick he's obsessed with..

So, yeah, Nick. :)

I can't tell you how amused I am by the "Old as BALLS" one. I lol'd so hard when I saw it.

Kate Beaton jokes are my favorite kind of jokes.

I remember reading that book last summer and not thinking much of it.

I get the feeling a lot of the authors seen as "modern classic" in public schools would roll their eyes and facepalm at how their works are being used in education.

Not every "great book" is great when forced down your throat with accompanying pedestal.

(Gatsby was alright, but then, we Pre-AP students got Andy fucking Dufresne reading book-on-tape selections. And yes, he affected accents and did the female voices. It was hilarious.)

I had to read it three times in the course of my education-- the best time was for my "American Neon" course my senior year of college. My professor said "Ignore all the literary crap and focus on the adultery and gangsters."

That's when I learned to love Gatsby.

"The sign, kids, the sign on the road with the glasses... symbolism... oooooooo *wiggles fingers*"

Yeah, fuck that shit.

I'm fortunate that I read it 'cause I wanted to and not for school. So I actually really like it, but I never had to analyze it. What can I say, I'm a sucker for purplish prose.

great comic!! Hate the novel, luv the comics

and to add to the growing comments on this: Gatsby was never forced down my throat in school, read it on my own... F. Scott Fitzgerald as a writer bores me to tears!! ALL OF THIS WORK!
