So, the fourth anthology story.

It's been mentioned in the threads of other posts, but I don't think it's ever been posted, and this must be rectified! Eight pages of a twenty-four page story behind the cut.

Ace, being a former shelter dog and having once been in an abusive home himself, decides the kid can stay. After the pets find clothing and food for him, the boy explains that he's been a runaway for quite awhile. The tattoo on his chest he got from a supposed tattoo artist without his knowing, after she became interested in his skin and he either got blackout drunk or was drugged. He and Ace adore each other, and the other pets, even Pugs, warm up to the kid as well, being fascinated by a human who runs with them like a member of the pack. However, all is not well. The kid has periods of disappearances he never talks about, and the pets get curious.

And find him eating a neighbor's rabbits alive.

Worried, they try to summon the Wise Dogs, but when the kid finds them doing so, he tries to join in, only for his attempt at a howl to set off something inside him. Vomiting blood, he drags himself into Ace's doghouse, and the pets realize the cracking sound they're hearing from inside isn't wood, but shifting bone.

Ace attacks the werewolf, trying to force him to give up and change back into the boy. The pets give chase to try and save Ace, but they're not the only ones. Hunters have been tracking the werewolf after it killed someone they knew, and open fire with silver bullets as Ace and the werewolf fight. The gunfire knocks them both off a cliff and mortally wounds the werewolf, and the shock of dying forces it to change back into the boy.

The hunters make sure the werewolf/boy is dead and drag him away, leaving a badly injured Ace on his own.

Puts a lump in my throat every time.

Lovely tidbit about this story: some of the last pages where Ace and The Boy are parted were originally supposed to be fewer with smaller panels due to monetary constraints, but Thompson redid them gratis because she felt the story just couldn't be done justice otherwise.

I'm clearly old and jaded because I guessed the kids nature straight off (I was even slightly worried we'd end up with Ace being infected too and thus being cursed to be a human when the full moon comes around)

That being said, this is beautiful stuff (of course)

I can never understand how one comic can be so aww-inducing and heartbreaking at the same time, but BoB accomplishes that every time.

Love the art too, but that's no surprise.

Yeah, easy to guess the werewolf part, but WTH, not expecting the sad.

It kinda like if Remus Lupin was killed off at the end of the Prisoner of Azkaban.

I knew that were some story in between the #1-4 issues and the individual books that was referenced the werewolf, and here it is.

Looks like the Wise Dog knows something about Ace that we have not seen. Ace is stronger than before (able to break the chain on his doghouse). And his senses have improved as he heard the battle from the forest with the aggregate frog demon(s). His speed must be enhanced, too.

Whoa. That is a pretty scary version of a werewolf there. BoB continues to amaze.
Also, I just realize that 'Whitey' looks a LOT like my own dog, only with slightly more symmetrical markings, shorter legs and less tragic eyes. Spooky.

Puppies! I want to huggle them!
Even the sad can't detract from the fact that PUPPIES!

This is not a very healthy attitude for an actual dog-owner to have.
