It has been explained before with the Diana Trevor story, though I guess a tip of the hat to a woman who gave her life to aid them wasn't good enough. Really drilling that in with Hippolyta wearing the flag in the scene right before this yet dropping the connection in favor of some coincidental weather and a few stars that might be Cassiopeia.

For a moment there I almost thought this was closer to the present day, ignoring the sudden break in the story, and they might actually be trashing the swim suit in favor of something less ridiculous.

Silly, optimism. Sensible clothing is for kids* (and men).

*If you know of something that contradicts this, please don't tell me. I don't want to know.

THAT MAKES IT WORSE, I clearly taught you all wrong.

Thing about Diana's costume, I mostly just ignore it; as you say, she's Diana. If she isn't being written and drawn with the presence to mostly pull it off regardless, well, there are bigger problems happening than same-old-same-old male gaze anyway. (And, man, if Blackest Night has taught me one thing, it's never underestimate how much worse it could get.)

I think it's just that it would be among the easiest of all the bad costumes to fix and one of the least justifiable by canon, so once the topic actually comes up, I'm less amenable to active defense of it than I am of, like, Kory's purple whatsit or whatever. (Also, in the case of this particular retcon, I take issue with the diminishing of the Diana Trevor story, which I think is both powerful and important, and would be a question here even if Diana dressed like Gort.)

It's so great and powerful that most Wonder fans hate it and no one even mentions it for years at a time and it completely baffles new readers.

You know, you keep saying the Diana Trevor thing is hated, but can you actually point to any evidence, any forum post or blog or anything, that actually backs up your claim?

I gotta admit, I am not a fan of it. Her story works fine without it, and makes her more pro-active if anything.

I wouldn't say 'hate,' but I wouldn't call it powerful and it doesn't resonate with me.
