Title: All-Star Western #10 - "Welcome to Paradise" (DC, 1972, 16 pages)
Creators: John Albano (writer), Tony De Zuniga (art)
Availability: Available in Trade

More Jonah Hex, as requested by [profile] morganna006.

Jonah Hex rides into the peaceful, civilized town of Paradise Corners, bringing in two fresh corpses to collect bounty on. It turns out he's arrived just in time: his two bounties are former members of Big Jim's raiders, and more of them have ridden into town and are acting up.

After a brisk pursuit through the local saloon and whorehouse...

Jonah leaves the kid to pursue the raiders. Several bloody skirmishes later, Big Jim is all that's left of his gang, and he's not inclined to go quietly.

His typically onery disposition somewhat lightened by the promise of apple dumplings, Hex brings in his latest pile of corpses for reward and makes inquiries as to how one might go about purchasing a house in Paradise Corners. While the locals are glad to have a mean snake like Hex around to clear out the rats, that doesn't mean they want him around on a regular basis -- no sir, there are no houses to be had anywhere in this territory, nope, so sorry -- and so Hex scornfully laughs them off and rides out.

Y'know, seeing Tony de Zuniga's art in B&W really reminds me that he got his start in Filipino komiks. The BLAG! sound effect in the next-to-last panel is another reminder. I don't come across it often in comic books published in the US.

The inference here, of course, is that Hex really WAS starting to take a shining to the boy - but he realizes the truth in his mother's words. He IS a murderin' hellion - that's his job - and he's no sort of fit mentor for a kid. However, he'll be damned if he'll out and say that, so he acts mean instead. It's good characterization - deep down, he's got the potential to be a real nice guy, but he's so set on being an ornery rotten polecat that even the thought of potential niceness on his part makes him nastier than ever.

Thank you so much!

Wow, the art is gorgeous. There's all sorts of great little details like the flies around the corpse. And I really like how Jonah's face is almost always partially in shadow.

This is a pretty great bit altogether.
