Jonah Hex. A scar-faced, motherless cuss with a cash-box where his soul oughta be. Ugly as sin and twice as deadly. His only companions are death itself and the acrid smell of gunsmoke.














The current series has quite a bit to recommend it, but I admit, I'm enjoying the older takes a lot more right now.

So I'm guessing the canteens were full of something other than water... nitrogylcerine perhaps?

Hex had been having trouble with another bounty hunter coming in, essentially kill-stealing his finds, and getting credit -- worse, getting payment -- for them. So after he tracked down "Dutch" and his crew, he made as if to take the long way back to civilization across a stretch of desert so as not to be followed. Other bounty hunter comes in, jumps Hex, and takes off into baking hot desert with $1000 worth of bounty...and a dozen canteens loaded with sand. Doesn't end pretty for him or anyone with him.

Possibly, or possibly it's just a nod to how naive Hotchkiss is about the realities of this sort of thing. I mean, considering what you hear about how parched with thirst one can get in desert areas, and how easy it is for a canteen to be hit by a stray bullet and punctured, I would think it would only be prudent to bring along a few spares, if you could.
