Avengers #1 Preview - Wanted, Heroes for Heroic Age

CBR has a seven page preview up for Avengers #1. A couple of pages were floating around the net already but now there's lettering and some of the dialog is pretty cute.






So Steve's the voice for "Forgive and Forget" and Wonder Man is the one going "We can't pretend we can just go back to how it used to be, these last five years have been really messed-up!"?

What a balanced presentation of both sides!

And it's working. (Stupid Wonder Man, talking back to Captain Rogers. Who does he think he is? Screw him!)

I think Steve's pretty much complete and utter failure to adequately answer Simon's quite valid points speak volumes.

I still can't believe they're letting either Steve and Tony Stark have anything to do with the Avengers again, from a trust AND PR point of view, it's ridiculous.

Maybe it's because I'm a Brit not American, but the worshipping of Steve as being something which is automatically the right thing to do is kinda creepy.

Nice to see the Avengers Next cartoon get SOME validation though.

The MU would be much better if Steve would just stay away from it. I can't stand the sheer mind-numbing stupid self-righteousness that oozes out of his every pore.

It's not even that I disagree with the sentiments: It's the idea that we're supposed to buy it because who is saying it that is extremely irritating. It's an Ad-hominem (although not the usual case) they're arguing from WHO is saying it rather than WHAT he is saying.

2. Wonder Man's haircut is aaaaaawful. It's not the early 90s anymore!
3. I'm always happy to see Spidey get some background love, but what is he actually doing there? That webbing looks like it's getting in the way, not helping.

At the beginning I thought it's Johnny Storm and blamed it on the bad art... until I understood! Cap will be played by Johnny in the Captain America film, so it's some clever thinking on their part.

Started reading Marvel in the mid-70s and NEVER thought I'd say this, but Simon Williams is right for once in his miserable life.

I can't get with the art at all.

The art is ok for the most part (except for Carol, yeesh), but it's not so much the art being bad as it is inappropriate. Even more than Steve looking way too young, he looks practically haughty in that one panel. Steve should never look haughty.

I hate that he decided Thor needed gloves. Thor's costume was just fine as it was JRJR. Also why couldn't Coipel have been on art duty for this? If he were this title would sell so much better.

Side note: why is Steve being drawn like Johnny Storm, here? He looks like he's super-young and slim.

I do wish that Bendis' characters could...I wish they...they just all start to have a...what a...you know, a similar voice. Right. A similar voice. Sometimes that....the broken up dialog works for some characters, but not for others. This doesn't sound like Cap, to me.

The two page spread with all of the Avengers responding to Steve's recruitment is a great example of what I hate about Bendis' writing, the painfully simple one word responses and stilted speech, everyone who says more than a few words sounds grossly out of character or is a caricature of themselves.

"I have to ask my mom"? "OMG"? It's like Bendis has never read anything with these characters before.

The preview's only really interesting in that the Next Avengers show up.

I guess this'll be where we see Avengers from numerous timelines come in.

I remember hearing Spider-girl and A-Next would be appearing as well.

Bu-wha? I thought Kang and Immortus weren't the same person and Immortus wasn't a time master anymore? Then again, the powers that be pretty much stopped acting like Avengers Forever was canon once they offed Genis-Vell in Thunderbolts, so I'm not as surprised as I could be. Sad, though, 'cause I liked that bit of development.

To be absolutely fair, this depiction of Simon is in keeping with his post-Mighty Avengers disillusionment, which was a plot thread for a while, and with his depiction in the Dark Reign: Lethal Legion limited series. Bendis is actually respecting some recent continuity here, albeit some that rests on a relatively obscure book.
