CBR has a seven page preview up for Avengers #1. A couple of pages were floating around the net already but now there's lettering and some of the dialog is pretty cute.

So Steve's the voice for "Forgive and Forget" and Wonder Man is the one going "We can't pretend we can just go back to how it used to be, these last five years have been really messed-up!"?

What a balanced presentation of both sides!

And it's working. (Stupid Wonder Man, talking back to Captain Rogers. Who does he think he is? Screw him!)

Actually ordinary science has had mind-wipe drugs for decades. Google "Twilight Sleep". And yes, the doctors and scientists I've spoken to about they say it can be used to actually wipe memories. The reason they're not used today is a primer for why this technique should not have been used on Wanda.

So by 'mindwipe drugs' you mean 'the person won't remember what happened while they were drugged' rather than 'we can take a person and remove some of their memories of previous events'?

And yes, the doctors and scientists I've spoken to about they say it can be used to actually wipe memories.

If you are claiming that this can be used after the fact to retroactively remove memories, then citation very much needed.

It's one of the uglier but littler-known chapters of mysogyny.

The truly hideous irony is that overdoses of "twilight sleep" used to be given to unwed mothers who were giving up their children just so that they would forget ever having them. With a large enough dose, it will take out six months of memories. At six months the memories haven't fully been integratedl; anything further back is in "deep memory" and can't be touched easily. The negative consequences that can occur regarding psychological trauma -- well, consider Wanda Exhibit A.

Citation, please, I'm Googling and I can't find anything suggesting it causes major amnesia.

I found it in a neuroscience journal about fifteen years ago and in some feminist scholarship, but neither reference seems to be online.

You can't find reference to scopolamine causing amnesia?

Yes, but only for the period during which the person is actually drugged. There are some references to excessive anaesthesia causing memory and cognitive impairment, but that is brain damage.

It does appear that women would forget the actual childbirth, ie the period for which they were drugged, but I can find no indication that it blots out any other memories, and respectfully, unless you have a more accurate citation, I am inclined to believe you misremember, unless you are saying they were drugged for six months of their pregnancy.

No, I keep telly you it has to do with how the brain processes memory. A large enough dose will wipe out the previous six months worth of memory, because the brain hasn't fully integrated them into long-term storage. After six months it gets very difficult to wipe memories.

If you want the exact neuroscience, my source will be busy for the next three weeks getting the school year finished. See me after that.

You've explained how only memories up to six months are removed. You've not explained how memories are removed.

Like I said, give my source a few weeks to finish grading his classes.

It also appears to be still in use as an alternative to general anaesthetic.
