Part 2 of "Rose Red," in which we get Willingham's spin on the folk tale of Snow White and Rose Red...

The dwarf's power is in his beard. Now that he's been trimmed, he's powerless, and the bear shows up and decapitates him.

And that was the day Rose Red lost her sister.

Well, he's just keeping his word. Can't fault him for that.

This issue read like an illustrated children's fairytale, which was very charming. I liked it.

Having Snow White in Fables be the Snow White from both German tales has always been something that I needed Bill Willingham to explain, because they really don't work together unless you know in which ways he's edited them together. Particularly, I need to know how Snow White can have a loving mother in one story and an evil Stepmother in another.

So I'm excited that he's finally explaining how that's all possible. I'm sure (if this first part is any indication) he'll do it in typical Fables style.

I love that first panel. "the vital business of bears," and Snow wishing him well.

I do have to comment on Mark Buckingham's art. He's still one of my favourite comic artists, and his animals are ALWAYS fantastic, but I do miss how detailed his human figures used to be. They were really top notch around March of the Wooden Soldiers, but his style has changed quite a bit since then.

I was hoping the Bear was Mr. Grandours.

Although I suppose it could still be him. Wasn't Grandours some kind of sorcerer-king?

True. And I'm pretty sure Mr. Grandours is just a name he picked when he came to the Mundy world.

For some reason, this fairy tale has always REALLY creeped me out.
