THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #36

Written by J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI

Art and cover by JESUS SAIZ

When Adam Strange offered Lois Lane the chance to file a story from Rann, she jumped at it - but she wasn't expecting to become an interstellar war correspondent! It's another surprising single-issue epic from the Eisner-nominated team of Straczynski and Saiz!

On sale AUGUST 18 * 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US

This issue will hopefully be excellent. There are not enough good Lois stories out there. Though I am a bit surprised to realize JMS is still on Brave and the Bold, along with Wonder Woman and Superman.

It's about time they gave Lois a story of her own. It's been awhile. I keep hoping Gail Simone will do a Lois mini.

That would be nice, seeing how my not so secret dream of a Greg Rucka penned Lois Lane ongoing has become even more unlikely.

What the hell is this Legacy crap?? Has DCs Silver Age fetishism grown to such bizarre proportions they're actually retelling the entire thing again? The Hell?! Whiny nerdrage isn't usually my thing but that's just.. bizarre.

Hell Yes! To Adam Strange & Lois Lane though. Those two should get along great.

Why are we reliving the Silver Age? Don't we make fun of the silver age?

Can't we relive the gold or bronze ages?

Because the Silver Age was all about Hal Jordan and Barry Allen being Awesome?

Because the Silver Age was about hope and ideals and optimism. At heart, I think people want to relive those days to wash out the taste of the post-Miller, post-Moore grim 'n gritty days. Problem is, those are the stories today's writers were raised on, so they're still making the same mistakes and, in doing so, dragging the best parts of that nostalgia through the mud.

If the new nostalgia was all like THE NEW FRONTIER, we'd all love it as much as the writers and editors want us to.

The more I think about it, the more I think that The New Frontier is really a Bronze Age story with Silver Age trappings. We have the super-powered alien menace, and plenty of appropriate sciencey stuff, but the idealism is tempered by a look at the world as it was. Diana's disillusionment with the U.S, Hal's severe PTSD, and especially John Henry's story would never have shown up in a Silver Age story.

Now that is a rather excellent observation. Maybe that's more the era that this New Nostalgia is trying to evoke rather than the 60's.

I worded that badly. It's more like if we must relive the past can we relive the parts that don't suck.

I feel like I've been soaking in someone else's nostalgia for a long time, really. All of Spielberg's animated series, Muppet Babies, Muriel's Wedding, Mama Mia, That 70's Show, Michael freakin' BOLTON!, and on and insufferably on, it's all been people dredging up the things they liked when they were kids and deciding to do them again. And while it can be pretty cool (again, Muppet Babies, Animaniacs, and so on), after a while I get nostalgia overload and just wanna see good stories without having to use stories that we've already been told.

Completely agree - so much cognitive dissonance there. It's great up to a point and then it's overload. Maybe it's the whole - 'cool, you remember back then' which evolves to 'wow, you're OLD'. As much fun as it was to teach all the kids the dances from 'Saturday Night Fever' at a 70's party, it really dated me

(And speaking of disco, everyone like my Black Cat commission of Nightwing and Starfire? I forgot to post it at the time I had it done.)

It is Bronze Age. Some Silver too, but Bronze is from around 1970 until COIE (when Barry Allen died). Nearly all these returning characters survived through the Bronze Age and into the Modern Age. Some characters like Firestorm weren't created until the Bronze Age.

And Golden Age stuff is mocked and ridiculed just as much as Silver Age around here.

So so excited for both of these!

The DC Legacies thing doesn't bother me because it's going to cover everything from then to present day -- and it has nothing to do with bringing certain characters back. It's just about showcasing how the superhero world has evolved and changed.

Also, pretty art.

Mmm eff yeah Lois.

To me, the most rage worthy thing would be to bring the Big Seven back for the JLA :*D I HAVE SUCH EDGY OPINIONS, I KNOW, but it is true. Not showcasing this legacy stuff.

From: [personal profile] mad
Babs is hanging with the Titans? On the one hand, yeah, wouldn't that have been cool...on the other, the fact that Babs didn't have much contact with superheroes who weren't Batman and Robin prior to becoming Oracle has, IMO, informed her character quite a bit.

But at the time, wasn't she in Congress and at least 25 (per the Constitution, a member of the House of Representatives has to be 25 years of Age) and not exactly in the whole teen scene. Dick was a college guy with a crush on Babs and the whole secret identity thing was still somewhat secret, or do I have my eras wrong - it was during the 'Batman Family' run but don't they intersect with the Teen Titans run?

Lois Lane and Adam Strange! Fuck yeah! I will so kill for a Lois Lane: Investigative Reporter comic where she does war coverage (like this) or exposes dangerous criminals. Perry, Jimmy, and Clark (not Superman) and some people from the DP would be her supporting cast.

And why is Batgirl and that one character whose name I forgot hanging with the Titans?

still trying to make sense of the Babs thing - as I said above, I think she was in Congress at the time by day and at least. She was vigilante-ing it up as Batgirl by night. Dick was following her around puppy dog-style day and night under both identities... or I could be wrong, that was the Batman Family story line and maybe (as I have been finding) it has nothing to do with anything... but I have never seen her in the original Teen Titans comics I have.

But what the heck, we can change everything, we are (duh, duh, duh) DC! The laws of physics, common decency, story continuity and sensibility (and shall I continue?) need not apply!

And according to Marc Andreyko, Dick and Babs are the same age now. We'll see if that sticks, or if that was just a one-off mistake in the annual.

I think Andreyko has said over at the CBR boards or some place that the Babs/Dick being the same age thing was a mistake on his part.
