Always love reading Elseworlds tales and this one sounds interesting...

SUPERMAN: THE LAST FAMILY OF KRYPTON #1
Written by CARY BATES
Art by RENATO ARLEM
Cover by FELIPE MASSAFERA
Returning to a character he's long been associated with, legendary writer Cary Bates explores a different side to Superman's legend in an Elseworlds tale that hinges on the fact that while baby Kal-el has rocketed to the distant planet Earth from his doomed homeworld of Krypton, he was not alone. How does a world handle the emergence of the Last Family of Krypton as Jor-El, Lara and Kal-El make Earth their adopted home?

Shouldn't they say Lara-El if they're gonna bother saying the -El part of the other two's?

Shouldn't they say Lara-El if they're gonna bother saying the -El part of the other two's?

That's the way they've always said the names. If it's not "Lara," it's "Lara Jor-El".

They're finally doing Elseworlds again? ABOUT FUCKING TIME!

Did DiDio put an embargo on them or something? I'm seriously asking. I have this vague impression that editorial wanted to halt them as an imprint, at least for a while.

I do seem to recall him saying they were taking a break from them for a while a few years back. Something about how he felt they'd been cranking them out a bit too much, and they were going to let that lie for a bit.

Though, I do agree with you in that I'm happy to see them returning to Elseworlds again. I have rather enjoyed most of the ones I've read at this point.

In addition to this book (Cary Bates, woohoo!), we know that Batman: Creature of the Night (Kurt Busiek, John Paul Leon) is also in the works, a thematic sequel to Superman: Secret Identity.

Well, it was mentioned in a Booster Gold issue (I think it was #30 or #31) that Hypertime still exists, so an infinite amount of Elseworlds is possible.

My theory is that DC omniverse consists of 52 core universes, each with infinite branching Hypertimelines.

Oh joy, can't wait to see Jor and Lara are going to be xenpphobic dicks in the comics considering how the Kryps have been since they been acting in Smallville and the comics themselves.

Maybe not. After all, their costumes are much closer to the Golden Age original than the modern versions, so perhaps it's hearkening back to them - and they were fairly nice people.

THANK YOU. My thoughts exactly. I mean, Alex Ross isn't the only comic artist to create photorealistic painted covers, but...just in terms of colour and design, this looks like someone aping Alex Ross' style. Doesn't that Jor-El look alot like his Superman stuff?

Oh, it wasn't Ross? Huh.

I confused Lara with Ross's Wonder Woman. Both share the same mannish faces. And Jor-El is on steroids.

Oh, yeah! Hella lot more than 52. This is an awesome premise, I can't wait.

Love that art. Jor and Lara are way hot. I'm sure Lara had no problems passing Kal through those hips. XD

For some reason, I have the idea that there was room in the rocket for two, and Lara said no, that she wanted the best chance for Kal. I've wanted to see a corner of the multiverse where Jor said, "Yeah, I guess you're -- look out behind you, it's Zod!" *conk* and in the rocket she goes. Of course, I also want to see that corner of the universe where the rocket doesn't crash and burn shortly after. Also want to specify that Lara doesn't wake up until the Kents are standing over the rocket. And that's how "Laura Kent" joins the Justice Society with Jay Garrick and Alan Scott.

Heh, in this universe, Jor had enough time to build a Millenium Falcon... XD

There WAS room in the rocket for two - that was part of the initial tellings of the story. Jor-El urged his wife to get into the rocket with the baby and save herself, but she said no, she didn't want to live without him, so they just sent up Kal.

There was an annual about a similar theme back in the 90s, as well. The year that DC did all their annuals with an Elseworlds theme.

Basically, Kryptonians took over Earth and Kal-El eventually adopted a secret identity, Superman, to overthrow them.

It used the Byrne version of Kryptonians, though, as cold, calculating, science-based. So Supes had to fight his own father in the end. Oh, and Lex Luthor, too. I'm sure someone has the issue that can put up some scans. I would, if I had a scanner.

schala_kid: Stephanie Brown as Batgirl (supergirl)
From: [personal profile] schala_kid
Lara should be Lara Lor-Van, although some people refer to her as Lara Jor-El or simply Lara-El (it always changes). Alura has always been Alura In-Ze but in Supergirl titles she was called Alura Zor-El so it always changes.

I am glad the Elseworlds are making a comeback, I know the Superman landing in Gotham thing has been done to death but I would like one where Thomas and Martha already have Bruce (instead of Clark assuming Bruce's identity) so the story would have them both be brothers :3.

But what I really want to see is what if Supes landed in Themyscira? I kind of like the idea of Superman being raised by the Amazons and him and Diana being raised as siblings too.

Awesome ideas!

Curious where you'd go with it after the bullets bounce off Kal instead of passing through Thomas and Martha.

But oh, yes! Diana and Kal running around in Paradise. Talk about Wonder Twins. Were there any Amazons who petitioned the Queen to have him sent away after he landed? Issues for little Kal, being in a society where there are no men's restrooms? If Diana shows skin because her culture is not ashamed of nature, will SupWonderman's outfit have bare legs and shoulders? Bracers or no, since they wouldn't be necessary? A tiara crown? Does Kal build a Fortress in the Arctic, or do Kal and Diana build a Sanctuary on Themyscira, or no base at all? Yeah, the rocket landing in Themyscira would sure turn that world upside down. Want!

I'm looking forward to this because it's been so long since DC has produced an Elseworlds book. That being said, I don't think I've ever read anything by Carey Bates so i don't know what to expect.

Also, while I do not approve of the Ross-ishness of the art, I do kind of want to nuzzle Lara's belly (my shallowness is getting the best of me. 'Cause, while I'm not a fan of her face, her body is very much my type). Weird thing to admit, I know.

If they're bringing Elseworlds back (FUCKING FINALLY GOD) then they should start with the character that started them.

Aaron "The Mad Whitaker" Bourque; sure Supes probably appeared in more of them, but when you're a trend-setter, you don't have to follow the leader.
