Failsafe

Four scans from Invincible Iron Man #26.

Various things going on this month, as the Hammers continue to scheme and sell weapons to terrorists (with Stark labels on them), and Tony goes about setting up his new company (apparently headquartered in Broxton for the time being):

Heh.

The failsafe was a nice touch, but that strikes me as a plot element just begging to be ignored by future writers.

Didn't Maria Hill (on Tony's say-so/authority) try to arrest Captain America even before the Registration Law went into effect (or something like that) and now she's joining Victoria Hand at Steve's side? C'mon, not even Steve is that kind and altruistic.

Also have they brought up the fact that Maria/Tony had sex (before he went to get it on with Pepper) before he lost all his memory? Because that seems awfully convenient way (in addition to getting out of all Tony's fascist) to drop that plot point as well.

Shh. We'll supposed to ignore that just like her nuking the Savage Land in her first appearance and using suicide bombers on the Inhumans.

Why should Hill be so annoyed at the "I'd do it all again" line? She comes off to me that she's be of the same mind-set and like Tony, she hasn't apologized to Steve about the horrible stuff she did to him. Heck, I don't fully believe that Maria Hill thought that the SHRA was a bad thing.

Or is she annoyed that Tony doesn't remember sleeping with her as pointed out in an earlier comment?

I think it's the arrogance that annoyed her. Even after seeing what the fallout from his (and the relatively scot-free Reed Richards) actions is (directly and indirectly), he'd pull the whole damn thing again, because he's right, dammit!

Which is probably supposed to make him just make him look flawed, but looking to make things right, but it just makes him look like an asshole.

And yes, Hill's actions do need to be addressed, but at least she's not going "I still think I was right" every chance she gets.

I wonder if David Michelinie ever thinks "Maybe I shouldn't have made Tony a drunk." Because certain stories make it clear Tony was the sloppiest of sloppy drunks. And Marvel's flexible sense of continuity means all sorts of "Tony's blackout #53" come up.

And the *really* weird part is it's hard to tell when Tony's anecdote took place. During the original "Demon in a Bottle" Pepper wasn't around and Rhodey was just introduced. And during the longer "Tony becomes a derelict and Rhodey becomes Iron Man" Pepper wasn't around then either.

You could do an UNTOLD TALES made entirely of what happened in Tony's blackouts.

It would have to be a MAX title, but still...

This just seems bizarre to me. I don't know why the contentious but mostly logical stuff TS did during Civil War and after would make him come to the conclusion that he had to give someone else the ability to take him down.

See, to me, it's not "someone else" who will have the ability to take him down, it's Steve. Because usually I attempt to justify these things in my own mind as "Tony and Steve are an old married couple". Sometimes it works, sometimes not so much. I'm just trying to pretend that the Civil War event didn't happen, though.

You know what to do with Tony? I'll tell you what to do with Tony.

Some night, when there's no moon and a heavy mist lies over the land, you slip unnoticed into his room. With a quickness, you bop him on the head and stuff him in a burlap sack you brought along for such a purpose. Then you vanish into the night with him, using connections to smuggle him across the border into DC territory.

Then you give the bugger to Richard Dragon and say "fix this, would you?" and don't come back for six months.

If he's not better after all that, shoot him in the head because he won't be worth hauling back.

The faces in this book are so awkward. Like sliding off the skull they're supposedly attached to, awkward.

It's too bad that Marvel doesn't put out an Iron Man book like Astonishing X-Men where you don't have to give a shit about the rest of the Marvel universe, also. I just think an 'inspired by the movie, now with less assholic baggage' Iron Man comic would be fun.

For Captain America's eyes only

Soooo this will be going to Bucky then? Considering Steve is not Captain America currently.

I dunno I liked it more when Clark and Bruce did it with the Kryptonite because that was more intimate and it meant something for both of them, here is just Tony giving to Maria because he feels guilt and doesn't trust himself.

Then again Clark and Bruce didn't go through civil war and weren't trying to avoid each other like the plague, but I really do wish Tony would at least try to go and give the hardrive to Steve himself (and maybe try to patch things up with him).

This is kind of not-good. That anecdote seems to be doing two things: comparing a drunken blackout rampage to what Tony did during and after Civil War, which really doesn't make sense (unless he really was blackout drunk the entire time), and trying to ride on the movie's success by having Tony out-Robert-Downey-Jr. Robert Downey Jr. And the art... Larocca seems to be using several different life models (I wouldn't mind if he stuck with making Hill look like Gina Gershon, because, you know, Gina Gershon), and that panel where Tony's holding up three fingers... that hand looks off.

One thing that really confuses me, here: in the new Avengers #1, Tony says, upon seeing Hill will be leading the team: "I am VERY OK with this."

WTF?

Someone also commented that this shows that Hill has learned from her mistakes. How does it show that? Best I can tell, Hill is just mad that she failed.

I'm also of the mind that Fraction is being forced to keep reiterating that "I'd do everything exactly the same" nonsense. It's really annoying.
