Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #10

I love Ultimate Spider-Man. Especially given the current state of things in the 616 universe, USM has become the 'real' Spidey for me. Say what you will about his other titles, but Bendis on the ball with USM.


So, basically in the aftermath of Ultimatum, being a mutant is illegal. Kitty Pryde finds herself being arrested by federal agents during her class. Kong comes to her aid and Kitty manages to phase both of them under ground.






As a fan of both Kitty (in all her incarnations, from 616 to Ultimate) and Kong (who's such a great supporting character), I love that Bendis has made them a couple and is still finding ways to include Kitty in the title even after she broke up with Spidey.

Later, Spidey, the Human Torch and Iceman (who are all living together under Aunt May's roof) decide to go over to Kitty's house to see if she's there, and...

They try to help Kitty, but she's not taking any of it...

ok... im a little confused.... why is Kitty so pissed at them? and why is she so sweet in one panel and all Dark Phoenix in another?

Well, she's sweet with Kong because he's the only one who stuck up for her. Pete and the rest didn't get involved and she feels betrayed by that.

One human did, but that doesn't change the fact that they're essentially outlawed and subject to arrest just because they're not human.

Now if you were living in the Ultimate Universe and had lost any family, friends, or acquaintances in Ultimatum, which I'm guessing everybody both human and mutant has, and someone said that Magneto was right, wouldn't the person that said that instantly be dead to you?

I didn't keep up with Ultimatum, but didn't Magneto's actions directly kill some of Kitty's friends in the X-Men as well?

It might seem odd for Kitty to be shouting "Magneto was right!", but in the context of the issue, it's pretty clear she's just lashing out against the friends she feels betrayed her, not agreeing with the whims of a mass murderer.

Think of it more as "LEAVE HULK ALONE OR HULK SMASH!"

Also, to clarify, the fire is from Johnny being sent crashing into things and vehicles being smashed, not from Kitty.

I really do like this book. It's one of my favorites.

But saying "Magneto was right" in the Ultimate Universe has a very different connotation than saying it in the 616.

Exactly, because it condones mass murder on a scale never seen before. How many people were supposed to have died in Ultimatum, exactly?

Not to mention that in Ultimate X-men he perpetrated countless brutal terror attacks against civilians.

Yeah, that's still quite a bit different from attempting global genocide and succeeding in killing untold millions.

So he didn't end up collapsing X number of planes and untold number of catastrophes that could come from a global collapse of all electricity worldwide?

Not to mention that if he put out the transformer hubs with that stunt then, well, those can only be replaced at the rate of 2-3 a year. And there's nearly a thousand, iirc, in just US of A. So the electric grid wouldn't be coming back for a while.

Okay, in a world with Reed Richards those stats are probably a lot better, but Mag's little tantrum might have had quite a bit more lasting effects if the writers had really gone into the repercussions of messing with the magnetic field at that level.

Leaving aside what the sudden blast of solar radiation absent the magnetic field would do to all life on the planet. A huge burst of UV rays or what have you? Magneto technically right there just caused the P-T boundary mass extinction all over again......

Isn't Kitty like, sixteen and being constantly bullied and now fleeing for her survival? I don't think we're suppose to think she's right. She's not going to be making rational and mature assessments right now.

Something I've been wondering about for a while. Why does Bendis write shouting dialogue with two exclamation points? Two just looks odd. Exclamation points should be like ellipses, with three being the rule for shouting. Am I the only one who feels this way?

I agree with you that Bendis using two exclamation marks is weird, but three is most certainly not the rule for shouting. They're called exclamation marks because they're used to suggest strong emphasis or shouting -- more than one isn't just redundant, it's sloppy excess. Or, to quoth the Pratchett, "Multiple exclamation marks ... are the sure sign of a diseased mind."

Well, earlier on, Kitty used her powers when some people were throwing food at her and she got in trouble for that (even though she was just defending herself).

I thought those were cameras on the cover at first. That is a classic "microphones in the face" shot, it sorta works with cameras, kind of looks silly with guns.

I liked her new power, or new aspect of her powers..it made logical sense.
