He was already mentally disturbed before that, so he probably would have snapped somehow. But Norman's infatuation with Spider-Man was definitely one of the catalysts for the Goblin.

~In bursts Uncle Ben, covered in Mardi Gras beads wearing a festive green top hat, he holds a huge margarita glass. Next to him is a blond girl, giggling and holding onto the shoulders of an even drunker Ned Leeds~

Date: 2010-05-22 11:26 pm (UTC)ETA: Mind you, although Harry doesn't remember this anymore thanks to BND (and I'm not sure he ever knew the details precisely), Peter did very early on, pre-Gwen's death, fail to report Norman to the police because Norman had amnesia and Peter didn't want to take Harry's father away from him. Certainly this doesn't make Peter automatically responsible for every person whose life was ruined or who was killed by the Goblin since then, but it was a pretty clear abrogation of responsibility, though an understandable, naive mistake.

*Seriously. I was reading War Games, thinking it can't get any more desk-shatteringly awful. I sighed, put it down, went to read another comic in the stack. Got to Sins Past, hit the big reveal, and had an overwhelming impulse to rip the comic up. Which horrified me because I was actually contemplating destroying a book. And I still almost did it. That's how bad it was.
