From Gordon of Gotham #1 and #2, approx 2 and half pages.

But he is quite partial to flame-haired Irish men

What pushes this into the realm of slight weirdness is that Gordon's narration is actually him telling this story to Batman! Hmmm, I wonder what he really makes of Bruce Wayne?

And can anyone please tell me what the heck his wife Barbara is going on about here because I really have no clue.

She's referring to the rabbit test; it basically translates to "I'm not pregnant and probably blame myself."

Don't. There are more ways to find out whether a woman is pregnant or not in the history of mankind then there are hairs on my head. Can't know all of them. :)

It's getting to be a pretty archaic reference these days, don't feel too bad.

I've only ever heard it used in Aerosmith songs, which are archaic as fuck.

And I feel old!

I think it was kind of misleading anyway--the rabbit died whether the test was negative or positive because however they tested they did something to the inside of the rabbit and had to cut it open to see the results.

And just to be clear, the whole "rabbit test" thing was pretty old fashioned by the first time I heard it!

What it did to the rabbit was altered her ovaries, in response to the pregnancy hormones. So they had to be removed and examined.

Thanks! I had a feeling it was something to do with ovaries. Makes you grateful for pee on a stick technology.

I remember there was a movie called "Rabbit Test" maybe with Billy Crystal? Maybe it was about mpreg? Anyway, I seem to remember the doctor actually presenting him with the dead rabbit and him trying to rescucitate it so he wouldn't be pregnant. Never actually saw the movie, but I saw that clip somewhere. I think that was what prompted me to ask about it the first time.

Apparently from 1978, and, yes, it starred Billy Crystal as a pregnant man.

I now want to see that just to see how he's supposed to deliver....

Any time! Like I said to [personal profile] darkblade, it's reasonably obscure; the primary reason I know much about it is an interest in the history of how pregnancy's been handled by society, lol.

there was an episode of MASH that used the test for Margaret.

Where they kind of busted the myth about the rabbit's living or not being an indicator of pregnancy or otherwise - part of the plot revolved around the fact that they'd have to kill the poor bunny...but Radar convinced them to just to surgery.

The best thing about that clip (it's in the Snopes article linked above) is how Hot Lips is throwing back a couple of stiff drinks as they're talking about the possibility of her being pregnant.

I'm pretty sure that nobody gave a rat's ass in the 1950s that pregnant women smoked and drank. Maybe that's why poor Jim Gordon was cursed with having to deal with all those evil, smelly, rotten hippies later on. :p

I have a friend who once caused her mother to freak out by plaintively wailing 'the rabbit died!'

She was playing Star Fox and Peppy had gotten himself toasted again.

I'd heard about that, forgotten. But...

Oh. So that's what that Aerosmith lyric was about.
