A nice Logan and Spidey moment.

Greetings True Believers!

Here are scans from the Logan anthology Wolverine #900.

It's a nice Peter and Logan moment. Wolvie is overexposed, no doubt about it. But he still has the magic when used right.

For example. Logan is still a great team-up character. With a good writer, any character riding shotgun with Logan turns into a great buddy-cop flick.

Enjoy "Birthday Boy".

Spidey is waiting in a freezing NYC street because Wolvie called him for some help. Logan shows up and says they have some time. He cajoles Spidey into going to a dive-bar next door. He changes, these panels made me laugh.

They walk in and Logan convinces the shady patrons that Spidey is just a dude on his way to a party.

Logan gets a bottle of hooch and invites Spidey to knock a few back, Spidey says he doesn't drink.

I like how that page shows that Logan's drinking kinda Quixotic.

Nature takes it's course and Logan has a light dust-up with the fella and his friends. Logan wins and the other dude's redhead convinces him to stop fighting.

Spidey is pissed.

I like this next page. Logan is a great bar-philosopher.

The guy whose girl Logan hit on puts a shotgun slug into the back of his head. Spidey grabs him and starts to web him up when not-happy Logan decides to hack/slash the guy.

Spidey stands in the way.

Logan relents and apologizes for losing control. Spidey is more confused than ever. He asks Logan how much longer they're going to be hanging around.

Logan: "It's 12:08. You can go. My birthday's over."

I liked that. I enjoy the dynamic between Logan and Peter. I think Peter looks up to Logan (almost reluctantly) and envies his wild-side. I think Logan feels protective of Peter in my annoying-little-brother sorta way. He also envies Peter's clarity. Love it.

6 out of 18 pages.

This is great. I love Logan's sixty-second drunks and Peter's unusually expressive eyes. And just the heart of the whole damn thing.

Thanks for posting.

Or he used to be. I don't know who this eternal manchild fuck-up currently appearing in his book is.

That doesn't sound right. Nostalgia is when you remember something as better than it really was, not when you make it worse.

I'd suggest "distalgia", but that sounds like a stomach complaint.

It works, the current run makes a lot of fans queasy.

Works for me. "Stomach complaint" sums it up pretty well. I'm sure it'll get better eventually, though.

His heir? Fuck that.

He IS the heart and soul of the Marvel Universe. ANd has been that ever since he got his own comic.

At the very least, Spidey's position as role model for the younger non-mutant heroes needs to be reestablished. Of course, doing that right now would ring very hollow.

and that right there is why Logan is still mah fav Marvel chara!

Since Nightcrawler is dead I guess Logan had to find someone else who didn't think he was a killer.

[personal profile] lonewolf23k 2010-05-30 11:17 (UTC)(link)
That actually makes sense. Nightcrawler's gone, so Logan feels the need to fill that emotional void and focuses on another acrobatic, wise-cracking idealist.

I think this was originally published way before Nightcrawler's death. So no, it doesn't make much sense.

At midnight? No Sabertooth likes to rest up, you know, get a good night's sleep in before going to give Logan his Birthday fight. You don't want to go into a Wolverine fight tired.

Awesome. It's good to be reminded of what I love about Spider-Man and Wolverine.

It's really touching that what Logan wants for his birthday is to feel like he's a better person.

Was this a reprint?

[personal profile] steverodgers5 2010-05-30 12:30 (UTC)(link)
Did Wolverine 900 have some reprints in it? Because I KNOW I have read this before. (Maybe it was digital release?) In any event still a very cool story. Dialogue felt a lot more in character than it usually does when Bendis tries for something similar. Good stuff!

[personal profile] arxh 2010-05-30 16:59 (UTC)(link)
And thats how you do spideys facial expressions. I love how he managed to convey confusion and annoyance just through the eyes, its fantastic. The facial expressions all throughout were pretty good and the story is kinda sweet.

I am usually all over human-Logan posts, but this..

I really didn't think it was that good. It seemed laboured, and a bit too pathetic and shallow. The rolling drunk/sober thing was weird too.

[personal profile] icon_uk 2010-05-30 20:37 (UTC)(link)
Have to say, I agree with you, I want to like it, but it does seem to be contrived, and Logan's argument is ludicrous, the WWII story equates "fighting for a cause/when attacked" to "picking a fight with someone deliberately to provoke them". Wolverine gets no kudos for staying in control in a fight he orchestrated and triggered.

I actually like the drunk/sober moment, since it's already established that Logan CAN get drunk, but his metabolism ensures it can't lasts more than a minute or two.

[personal profile] greenmask 2010-05-30 20:43 (UTC)(link)
I guess the concept of the drunk/sober thing is sound. Just mixed with the rest it falls flat!

[personal profile] psychopathicus_rex 2010-05-31 05:10 (UTC)(link)
Petey and Logan make a pretty good team, all right. This is an interestingly atypical example - most of the time, Wolvie is kinda grumpy and annoyed at Spidey, and Spidey is fruitlessly trying to lighten the tone a bit. Here, though, it's completely the opposite - SPIDEY is being the grumpy bear, and Wolvie's trying to get him to kick back and relax. They make for a good 'Odd Couple' dynamic.
And incidentally, am I the only one who thinks that artists are starting to forget that the eyes on Spidey's mask are just that - eyes on a mask, fixed in place? They seem to be treated more like big manga-type eyes these days, widening and narrowing like real eyes would. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, necessarily - it often works pretty well - but it's kind of a weird development.
skalja: Ultimate Spider-Woman posing like a BAMF (spider-man: spideyrat)

[personal profile] skalja 2010-06-02 00:16 (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've noticed that too. I think it works very well here because it's comparatively subtle and fits in well with the style of the artist (Pablo Rivera, I think?) -- some artists actually have the mask eyes squint or bug out, and that just doesn't work for me.

[personal profile] psychopathicus_rex 2010-06-02 01:04 (UTC)(link)
I think my favorite example of that latter one is a situation where Spidey is in very close proximity to an exceptionally hideous and repulsive bag lady who is yelling gibberish at him, and the white part of his mask-eyes SHRINKS DOWN TO TINY LITTLE DOTS to show how grossed out he is by her breath. It makes no sense whatsoever, but it's hilarious. Used to have an icon of it, but I left it behind on the old comm.
