Oh, and this series has a TV Tropes entry now; go nuts.
Bronze Age Wonder Woman
Jun. 24th, 2009 02:08 pmThese are from Wonder Woman: The Greatest Stories Ever Told, which I heartily recommend it to all Wondy fans. It opens with a nice long Golden Age story featuring a villain named Eviless, bizarre gadgets, outrageous outfits, and a lot more bondage than most Golden Age Wonder Woman stories. (Yes, I said "a lot more bondage than most Golden Age Wonder Woman stories".) There's also a story from the George Perez era.
These are the only scans from this book I'm posting; I'm hoping to entice y'all to buy it. ;-) They're from Wonder Woman #286, published in 1981.

In my last post I left John in a bit of a tough spot, imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit. I figured it wasn't really fair to leave him hanging and I ought to post how that entire mess was resolved...and I will. Eventually.
I thought it was important that I first establish how exactly he ended up in that situation. It's a tale of dickery, theft, torture and one of the most blatant and indefensible cases of WiR imaginable.

I am posting the last page of the volume. Not really a spoiler per-se.

Flying cars
Jun. 24th, 2009 10:41 pmThere's a charm to 19th Century visions of what the future would be like. I'm not scoffing at how wrong they went, I'm taking an affectionate look at human imagination at work. Sometimes artists took current trends and just escalated them, sometimes they came up with images from way out in left field.

This illustration is worth taking a few minutes to study at the largest size. It's by Albert Robida, for an 1890 issue of LA VIE ELECTRIQUE. My first thought was, look at all those wires all over the place! How can these flying taxis get anywhere? I bet there's accidents every day. Then I laughed at the driver's steering wheel, his cap and his businesslike posture.. he's just doing his job. There used to be a widespread prediction in the 1950s that at some point, most people would be driving flying cars or small helicopters everywhere. This hasn't come to pass and hopefully it'll never start to happen. People have enough trouble handling regular cars, which (when they stall out or break down) can roll to the side of the road in most cases. Looking up and imagining a dozen SUVs zooming overhead with drivers texting or finishing another beer or arguing on a cell phone.. not to mention all the vehicles which failed inspection or are almost out of gas or have the CHECK ENGINE light on for the past week.. well, I'd be apprehensive.
And here's a slightly more up-to-date 1960s version of a flying car. Watch BLADE RUNNER for Syd Mead's well-thought-out concept (and it's a good idea to watch BLADE RUNNER again, anyway.)

Barack the Barbarian!
Jun. 24th, 2009 10:57 pmGreetings True Believers! I picked up Barack the Barbarian #1 today and it is amusing. It hit me right in the Conan-fanboy part of my brain. It's an entertaining tale with familiar faces in new and strangely true roles. So enjoy!

basically, Brainiac 2's automated space police force has been subverted by a mysterious entity, leading him to... do stuff like turn one of the current-day members of Dawnstar's people into a bootleg Wildfire.
but who did it?
