Dig that great Aparo Two-Face, eh? I have a deep-rooted fondness for Aparo's turtleneck!Harvey.

While the story I bring you today is sadly not drawn by Jim Aparo, it's a fascinating one nonetheless: Two-Face's canon origin from 1977-1987, as seen in DC All-Stars #14: Secret Origins of the Super-Villains. The key twist to this take is the revelation that Harvey Dent wasn't Maroni's real target when the acid was thrown!

See for yourself in... The Secret Origin of Two-Face: Double Take! )

It's an interesting take only because it gives Harvey full cause to see himself (and by extension, everyone else) as pawns in the hands of destiny, and he's cool with that. The "vengeance" mentioned in the teaser image doesn't seem to matter to him either way. He's calm, sometimes even joyous in his madness: a common take on the character, especially in the Bronze Age up to the post-Crisis era, and this story gives it a sensible enough foundation.

However, it's precisely this take which makes Two-Face a character who only works as a supporting figure to make others react. He himself is almost a non-character, because action reveals character, and this Harvey makes no action unless the coin tells him so. One could say this applies Two-Face in general, but smart writers know how to subtly reveal character in other ways, which I'll explore in future posts.

This is why Two-Face was (and to many, still is) an under-loved character: because he was less of a character than a foil. As a result, the Bronze Age which brought Two-Face back into comics is also what kept him from becoming one of the greater presences in DC until the post-Crisis era. Yet even now, some writers go back to this take, which is frustrating. It can make for good stories of other characters, but it doesn't make Harvey himself an interesting character.

For Awesome New Female Character week, I'm going to go in a slightly different direction than some of the other entries.

I present to you Sawako Kuronuma, of "Kimi ni Todoke", created by Shiina Karuho. The official English translation is "From Me to You", but it can also be translated as "Reaching Out to You." Unfortunately, I only have the paperback edition, so just a couple of panels were scanable, rather than entire sequences.

The other person on the cover is Kazehaya, the romantic interest.

First impressions can be deceiving. )

Since it's New Female Character Week, I bring Magdalena Neuntauben of the Order, aka Veda. She's an action film star who adopts orphans and teaches them kung-fu. Her super-power is the ability to create golems from the earth or natural environment.

This comes from The Order #4, where Zombie Robot Hobos are menacing LA. The Order track them to the source of the radio waves that are controlling them. Veda and Henry Hellrung (Anthem) touch down on Skid Row to deal with some social issues as well as smashing Zoboes.

The Order #4 is one of the best single issues of a comic book that I've got.

A page from AVENGERS #6, as well as a couple of commissions with Ultron playing the part of Yorick. And no, not in that adaptation of Y: THE LAST MAN we're all waiting for.

Alas poor Ultron. Sort of. Not really. )

So it's Awesome New Female Character Week. What better time to check in with the hot new non-cannon romance find of 2010 ! I'm talking about the "Girl Without a World"... Bucky NOMAD: Rikki Barnes!* and" the Heart of the Spider" Araña ALL NEW SPIDER-GIRL: Anya Corazon.

So here's a nice moment from issue #4 of the supremely entertaining (though recently canceled) Young Allies.

I may have to do a Young Allies week at some point. )

*Ok Rikki technically isn't that new a character, but I tend to ignore the whole Heroes Reborn thing and pretend she's an awesome character created in the last two years.

The badass that inspired me in my childhood. The girl I'm cosplaying this month. The one who made me lose twelve pounds and made me gain abs and muscles in one month alone.

X-23, aka Laura Kinney, now Laura Howlett

It pains me every time someone who knows her has to introduce her as "Wolverine's clone" for people to at least make a connection. It's like introducing Daken as Wolverine's son--it gives people a preconception, and it's not nice.

What I know from Laura Kinney, X-23? She deserves normality, she's tough and it's difficult to judge her psyche, but she's a reeeeallly great character.

More or less..... )

In 2001, Kevin Smith brought Green Arrow/Ollie Queen back from the dead in Quiver. At the same time, he gave us the wonderful and crass Mia Dearden. Mia became Speedy under Judd Winick's pen, right after she found out she was HIV positive.

Mia is also the sole HIV positive character in comics who has not died due to the disease. The other two were Jet and Jim Wilson. Both died.

Some top trade paperbacks to check out with Mia featured in them include:
Green Arrow: Quiver (essential as this is her intro and features her origin/backstory)
Green Arrow: Sounds of Violence
Green Arrow: The Archer's Quest
Green Arrow: Straight Shooter
Green Arrow: City Walls (somewhat essential as she kills a man)
Green Arrow: Moving Targets (essential as this is the trade paperback that features Mia finding out that she's HIV positive)
Green Arrow: Heading into the Light
Green Arrow: Road to Jericho
Green Arrow & Black Canary: The Wedding Album

She also appears in the Green Arrow/Black Canary title, but uh, yeah. She's good in it! but the other characters not so much... :)

She and mortal boytoy Bill are so awesome they managed to catch the eye and heart of a confirmed DC Girl here. A quick look at her Marvel Database Project page gives her first appearance as February 2008 - is that all? - the creation of J.M. Straczynski and Oliver Coipel.

Here is Kelda being awesome when Norse-thugs hassle her beloved.
Go Kelda! )

And here she is when the Siege interrupts her bereavement call on the House of Bills.
I know, now. )

I hope we get to see more of Kelda (and Valhalla Bill) even now that JMS and Co. are off the book...

ETA: Is there a series name and/or tag for this Week?
