The final issue of the Earthplague portion of the Bloodlines annuals introduced the odd super being  known as Mongrel.

To say he has anger issues would be an understatement. This issue has a few things that bug me and would throw many off so I'll try to make it as clear as I can. Their are a few times jumps around in the story and perhaps most annoyingly is the effort to try explaining Hawkman's apparent status quo at the time, which well, I have no idea about and am ignoring it as best as I can.

19 pages from a 57 page story.

This Half Cambodian DC character makes the other one look like a ray of sunshine )

Greetings True Believers!

Here is another great tale from SMTW. It sucked for the Runaways when they realized that their folks were super-villains. It sucks harder when when your parent is a z-lister like the Leap-Frog.

So what is a kid to do? Find-out and enjoy!

When last we saw Jimmy, he was so startled by the discovery that the girl he was on a date with was a fifth-dimensional imp that he promptly fled into the restaurant's restroom.

Four pages from the Jimmy Olsen one-shot, which continues the story... )

(wow, back to back. That's lucky!)

And it's one where mutants are on the run, rather than the rise.

Those who live outside the force walls face more than humanity's Exonim (clever) legions and anti-mutant legislation; they face the government's elite mutant hunters.

Four men and two women, each with their own motivations to see mutant freedoms leashed.

Six very familiar faces broken by their world, they are what they are: the Avengers.

(After the Phoenix's blowup, no point in guessing what they're Avenging.. though I can see why someone suggested Freedom Force, instead. With a Ms. Marvel, even.)

And their story's to be told in the two-shot Age of X: Universe, whose first hasn't had the warmest critical reception. But that's to be expected, when it's a two-issue tie-in to an alternate reality event.

I liked this week's first enough to be awaiting April's second, though: Simon Spurrier's definitely had fun playing with established characters in a universe really foreign to them.

Jim McCann's AoX: Spidey backup, on the other hand, was a bit rote.. but Pete was exactly what you'd expect. )

In regards to the recent Frog-man story post regarding the son of the Frog-man, rzerox21xx mentioned that the story ignored the heartwarming frogman and leapfrog story from Spidey 185. Since I possess that issue, I thought I'd do a favour and post it.

Does it ignore? YOU decide! )

Back with some more Scalped. When we last left off, Catcher had just left Officer Falls Down to bleed out on a mountain because he discovered that Catcher had a hand in Gina Bad Horse's death. While this issue is a continuation, we don't see Falls Down this issue. Instead, the story shifts to Dino Poor Bear to focus on his burgeoning relationship with Carol Ellroy. While the relationship has been ambiguous ever since Carol left Dashiell Bad Horse to clean up from her drug addiction and put him behind her, things take a heartbreaking turn when Dino realizes what Carol really thinks of him. I'll let the scans speak for themselves.

You gotta sin to get saved. )

I’ve been lurking for awhile, finally got an account and was keeping an eye out for something worthy of a post. Found something by way of the recent spate of Captain America reprints Marvel has been putting out.

One cover and three pages of 10 from Captain America #357. (1989)

Lots of words and a few images behind the cut )

I love a good superhero slugfest, they can be very... cathartic (If they also feature cute acrobats or the like, so much the better, but it's not absolutely required)

However, I love the offbeat too, the "slice of life" stories which look at how superpowers impact ones life, and look at why some people become heroes and some people become villains, and why some people don't actually do much with their powers. The likes of "Astro City" and "DP7" examine this sort of thing, but there are others too. This is the first of a series about one title which did it very well indeed, IMHO.

"Common Grounds" was a 6-issue mini series from Top Cow Productions in 2004, created by Troy Hickman, with two stories per issue, and a rotating cast of noted artist telling one story each.

The premise is simple. In this world there exists a chain of coffee shops; "Common Grounds", whose purpose is to create a neutral environment for super-powered beings. Anyone is welcome (though "normals" tend to be intimidated) but the one rule is "NO FIGHTING". There's no truce magic, or power neutralising effects or the like, just mutual agreement. And it holds too, because even supervillains like somewhere to get a nice kruller and a cup of really good coffee. And anyone dumb enough, or psycho enough, to try something there would discover that A) Their bouncers are superpowered too, and B) All the OTHER heroes and villains who liked it there would be after you like a shot. You think Darkseid is bad, just wait until you see Bucky deprived of his coffee and morning Danish pastry... An eternity in the Firepits of Apokalips would be a refreshing spring breeze by comparison. (It's never stated, but one might assume that the Police don't intervene on Common Grounds property because if they're having a coffee they're not robbing a bank, and if you did try to intervene then it would get very messy very quickly.)

These stories are mostly 9 pages long (a few longer, a few shorter), which makes trimming to 1/3 a beast of a job, so I would thoroughly recommend checking out the proper versions of these stories (It's available as a TPB for those who can't find the single issues) as they do deserve a proper reading.
