Warning for British swearing and an unfortunately large two page spread.

By the Watchmen cocreator Dave Gibbons, the Originals is a graphic novel about a retrofuturistic take on the mods versus rockers culture in the UK in the 1960s, with a character getting drawn into violence and drug dealing as he joins up with the titular gang.

The art and story is good, and I can recommend it if you can grab it somewhere. Check it first though, my copy of it has about six pages duplicated in the middle of the book erasing a Dramatic Event.

Here's the intro to the main characters,

For more information on the Mods vs. Rockers thing, watch the 1979 movie Quadrophenia.

I loved Quadrophenia, it really got across the whole mood of the time. Effective storytelling FTW.

The Originals was a lot of fun. Although the "sci-fi" element was so slight, I wondered why they bothered. I get the feeling Gibbons just wanted to do a story about the 1960s, and someone convinced him that making it nominally "futuristic" would make it more marketable.

Just because it's science fiction doens't mean that it has to be all Transmetopolitan or Star Trekish.

It can be stuble and be used for good visuals and things, like when they go to the domed seaside resort and stuff.

Yeah, he says in the foreword that the Mods invented cool and nobody else really gets them. I think The Originals, much as I like it, was coming more of a space of homage than creativity. Especially given that he lifted a LOT of it straight from Quadrophenia.

I immediately like this better than Watchmen. These panels have space to breath. I'd definitely check more of this out, even if it's just a futuristic Quadrophenia homage (because even though I love the Who I still haven't got to see that yet so it will be new to me!). because it has it's own style.

And is it just me, or has Gibbons been reading Akira?
