No icon ragey enough. This one feels cold and bitter, which is appropriate enough.
A little under two pages from Birds of Prey #2.

With all the fail going 'round at DC lately, the last thing I needed this week was Gail Simone killing gays (even if he pulled the trigger himself). I don't even know anymore.
This shit better be a fake-out because I'm out of patience for Brightest Day and DC in general. I'm gonna go drown my sorrows in Pet Avengers. :(

I guess I just think Gail Simone is the last person in all of DC to have any vendetta against her own gay characters.
I haven't read the issue in full yet, so I don't really want to comment on the story yet, but I have to say that it's entirely possible for someone to write a problematic scene or story without having a "vendetta" against a character belonging marginalized group of people.
Furthermore, a reader can have a negative reaction to a comic or take away a meaning from it that a creator never intended. Intentions don't always matter.
Gail Simone is a good writer and has done a lot to better the DCU, but that doesn't exempt her from criticism. Just because we love her doesn't mean we can't get upset with her sometimes. (Not that scans_daily is a hive

quite a lot of them.
And I totally understand why people are upset. But the story is only half over.

Date: 2010-06-17 09:52 pm (UTC)First, I am generally less offended when a creator puts their toys back in the box. It would be terrible for someone to kill all off all of a team forever, but when Peter Milligan does it to X-Statix it doesn't have the same sting.
Second, I just have a hard time being outraged at Gail Simone for killing a gay character because I feel like she has been one of the most inclusive writers in either Marvel or DC. I do understand the concern every time a minority character dies and it literally decimates their representation in a universe. But I also feel comfortable with the knowledge that if Birds of Prey kills one minority character, chances are that we'll see two new ones in the future.
And finally, I was (perhaps not obviously) referring to MYSELF as king homo of gaytown, not another poster. Queer spotted, etc.

That's totally fine. I was just objecting to the insinuation that people expressing outrage/upset all believe that she has a vendetta, or that a creator can only write hurtful things when they have a vendetta.
