A sort of Father's Day post... kinda...
Jun. 20th, 2010 10:16 pmAnother litle gem from the Robin Archives Volume 2.
Now, I couldn't find Dick having a Father's Day story with Bruce (Though I know Tim had one), so I decided to go for the next best thing, and consider what Dick might get Bruce for his birthday. And here we have such a story from Star Spangled Comics 91 in April 1949. (4 pages from 12)
Now the question on the (Charles Paris art) cover is, is Dick locking Batman in, or locking him OUT? Whichever it is, he sure looks happy about it! :)

I should say that if you have any sort of Golden Age crack-monitoring equipment in operation, turn it off now before clicking on the link, because I am not going to be held responsible for accidental overloads.
It's tough cutting down a twelve page story, especially when you want to include a splash page, but I had to include this one for the sheer hell of it, and I believe I'm under the four page limit.

Dick even makes a cute wanted poster... and why Batman's birthday should feature Robin in handcuffs is one for the professional therapists among you because I'm not going near it... actually, there no way I can avoid it as the story progresses....
So, it's Bruce's birthday, and Dick can't think what to buy him. Alfred comments that he's using his natural skills to make an elaborate birthday cake. Dick thinks that this may be the key to his problem, he'll use his natural skills to give Bruce a present he'll never forget.

So Batman's gift is to pursue and catch a lithe limbed young acrobat in a hunt across Gotham, if he can. The kid is SHAMELESS... (Sorry, I promise to hold back on that sort of comment, it's inappropriate, and a little obvious)
There would be a future parallel to this sort of a gift in the Silver Age Elongated Man stories, where Sue Dibny's present for Ralph would always be a mystery to solve. Also the Dixon introduced "final exam" for new Robins (retconned in for Dick and Jason), which consisted of Robin having to evade Batman for a set period of time, but I digress.
Switching to Batman, Bruce discovers that the trophy Dick has taken is a bicycle (Taken from a villain known as "The Fence", who had appeared in an earlier SSC issue). Bruce theorises that Dick would try to pawn the bicycle for cash, so he hits the pawn shops...

"Deadly Dick" (possibly THE most unfortunate name possible, but never mind) ducks into the narrow service hatch behind him, which is too small for Batman, and by the time he makes it inside Dick has had plenty of time to change his identity, but into who...
Could he be the acrobat who is performing on stage? Batman thinks he might well be, and sets a cunning trap...

Okay, maybe NOT so cunning, but it's direct at least... The kid is clearly thinking "Worlds greatest detective? Really? Bastard!"
Instead Dick is actually performing a stage illusion called "The Headless Boy", which I can't showcase for trimming reasons, but I leave you to imagine it. He's also arranged it so that as soon as Batman tried to to walk across the stage to where he was sitting, he'd fall down a trapdoor and....

Batman takes it in good spirit since it's a charity performance, and gives the show his "seal" of approval... Ouch Bruce...
Having take the chance to plant a bug on Dick's bike, which the Boy Wonder has retrieved and is now using, Bruce pursues Dick but he cleverly avoids Batman by driving down the one major street in Gotham which is too narrow for the Batmobile....
Suspicious of the speed with which Batman found him, Dick locates the bug, and just manages to make it to the roof of a nearby building before Batman catches up with him, but luckily, is so overcome with desire that he doesn't notice the a low hanging wire and is clotheslined rather painfully.

Robin makes a dash for it back to his bike... and we find that Bruce actually HAD noticed the wire, but is having such fun with his present (It's all about the foreplay) that he pretended to hurt himself to allow Robin time to "escape" so as to extend the enjoyment. (That's either kinda cool, or really creepy).
Whilst climbing down the side of the building to resume the chase, Batman is ambushed by a couple of passing safecrackers who assumed that Batman was actually pursuing them...

There's such a thing as taking roleplay a little far Robin... What is a Boy Wonder to do?

Using the nail to free himself he then sets about making a loud tapping noise with it, which the villains hear and assume means Batman had a telegraph set hidden about his person and is now calling the police. They race inside the room, to be clobbered by Batman.
Robin calls Batman on his belt radio, and the clues he gives tells Batman that he's at a rag and paper baling centre.
Robin decides to use his slightly stalkerish knowledge of Batman against him.

So as it turns out Robin HAS given Batman exactly what he might have wanted... a Boy Wonder binding machine, and a free bound Boy Wonder as an incentive...
As it turns out, Batman has spotted Robin's shadow lying in wait, AND then set the trigger to Robin's weight instead.
Dick admits that Bruce has won, and then how long do you think it took Bruce to unwrap his present? ;)

Yeah, I can't imagine Commissioner Gordon finding a rhyme like that suspicious at all, especially when Bruce notes that it will only make sense to four people; Bruce and Dick are two, but he won't name the others out loud, instead thinking that Batman and Robin are the other two).
Realising that Dick had actually been responsible for saving his life, albeit in a rather random way, Bruce concedes that Dick had won the birthday challenge, and it's slices of cake all round.
To think, my Dad was usually happy with a pair of socks!

Date: 2010-06-21 04:01 pm (UTC)What got me about the scene though was the look of sheer terror on Dick's face as Batman approaches him. Not annoyance at being caught in the game, or rueful for not being able to avoid him, but sheer, unmitigated terror. Perhaps Bruce is prone to taking such opportunties to tickle Robin mercilessly....
