Celebrity Poker: Ben Grimm Style
Jun. 23rd, 2010 09:09 pmGreetings True Believers!
Fulfilling another request, this time it's the Ever-Loving Thing hosting superhero poker night. It's filled with laughs and good times. Enjoy!

Remember how Hercules lost his fortune to the Constrictor in Slott's She-Hulk?

Ha, go Herc.
It's party-time!

Oh Hank and Jan. You cheaters!
The Great Lakes Whoever they are this week arrive.

No respect, no respect at all.
Thing relates a story of how SQG helped him defeat the Bi-Beast and got an invite to the party.
Back at the tables....

Ben helps the Impossible Man, gets Alicia back and finally gets his Bar Mitzvah. It's a good issue.
Back to the game.

Look how happy they are, it's cute!
Ben's got another reward coming.

Ben leaves them with this.

Man, they're going to need lube, lots and lots of lube. Ha!

Date: 2010-06-25 12:19 am (UTC)It's a skanky dress.
It's a comment on fashion.

Date: 2010-06-25 02:55 am (UTC)That is slut-shaming, and if you read the article, you'll know what that means. It's condemning women, their bodies, their sexualities, insulting them, dehumanizing them, making it okay to dismiss and demean them. That you have equated sex-workers with that word is equally egregious.
Whatever your previous understanding of those words are, I am telling you now: in this community, do not call women or the way they dress "skanky", and do not conflate that word with sex-workers.
Re: Mod Note
Date: 2010-06-25 03:47 am (UTC)Fine, the words "skank, skanky" have been banished to the Phantom Zone.
Verboten. Verboten. Verboten.
Re: Mod Note
Date: 2010-06-25 03:54 am (UTC)I'm partly asking because I'm genuinely surprised that you had no idea that it was offensive, and it seems kind of...odd that you'd repeat the words in the midst of agreeing not to use them against women while participating on scans_daily.
Re: Mod Note
Date: 2010-06-25 04:53 am (UTC)I don't entirely agree on the reasoning "not to use them against women" I don't think I was doing that. I was talking one dress, at one time.
Plus, I'm tired too, I had a bad day and maybe I was looking for a fight.
It's not worth it, I don't agree with banning words without looking at the context they're used in and I think this could lead to the inablitly to say anything negative about female character.
I don't like the dress, it looked like Alicia stepped off the set of Law & Order: SVU. So I chose a descriptive word of what I thought it made her look like.
If it's not kosher, so be it.
Re: Mod Note
Date: 2010-06-25 05:55 am (UTC)Okay. I guess it was your attempt at snark that made me feel like you were trying to make fun of me, which I do not appreciate.
I don't think I was doing that. I was talking one dress, at one time.
I understand that, but the problem is in the language and the context in which you were using it, it's pretty near impossible for your comment on her dress to not reflect on her as a woman. Not to mention the weight that the word carries (as noted above) regardless of intention.
It's not worth it, I don't agree with banning words without looking at the context they're used in and I think this could lead to the inablitly to say anything negative about female character.
But in this instance you were trying to comment on the character's (or perhaps more to the point, the artist's) choice of dress, were you not? You can say that's an ugly dress, that you don't think it suits the character or situation, or that you hate the character, but to imply that the words you used in reference to it aren't usually wielded as gender-specific insults in this kind of context is pretty ignorant. (As to why gender-specific insults are usually bad: they tend to insult someone on the basis of their identity, which is a pretty basic form of discrimination.)
Quite frankly, I'm being generous here, because I'm getting the sense that a big part of why you don't like the dress is because you think it reflects negatively on her sexually, which again, is a part of slut-shaming. At this point, you should be well aware that we don't tolerate such things, as per our community ethos.
I won't use the words in the context you laid out again.
Thank you.

Date: 2010-06-24 02:18 am (UTC)Dropped BRIGHTEST DAY. Realized that the DCU's fate just doesn't matter to me anymore. But BATMAN 700 was a lot of fun. And you know why? Because it had NOTHING TO DO WITH THE REST OF THE DCU.

Two: Rated TEEN? Because people are drinking alcohol and gambling, I guess? Does this highlight how messed up some folks priorities are? You can have implied rape and murder in Spiderman and still get an 'A', but have people drink beers and play poker and imply consensual sex between adults and you get 'T'?
I say thee MEH.
