...How do they explain this? (If they do, that is.) Does he have some sort of breathing apparatus and that's why his back is to us? Or...?

I'm assuming this is from the Super/Bat arc in Superman/Batman, where Batman temporarily got Superman's powers. (Which I haven't read, thus the 'assume'.)

I don't know myself but the text bubbles seem to be the ones used in Superman/Batman.

The first thing I noticed was the cape ass. This place has finally corrupted me.

If you define geek as "computer/internet nerd", I wouldn't say so. Not everyone I know who likes comics likes the internet and it's memes. ;)

I think 'geek' has a much broader definition than that. Someone who is really into fixing up old cars, for instance, can be termed a geek, if they're enthusiastic and technobabblish enough.

Well.. that would define it as "technology nerd", which would broaden it considerably, but still not include comic nerds. ;)

I think 'tech nerd' or 'science nerd' are pretty good ways to define a geek, generally speaking - 'math nerd' might qualify, as well. Anybody can be a nerd, but it requires a certain level of specialized constructive know-how to qualify as a geek. I, for example, am a nerd on a number of different levels, but I'm hopeless at anything scientific, mathematic or technological, so I'm therefore not a geek. (Or you could just simplify things by saying that geeks are nerds who have the capacity to create and/or modify things and concepts that society as a whole may find useful, whereas us nerds, basically speaking, are bloody useless, and merrily so.)

But then you are in the need to define what is useful. Because actually everything we do is at least indirectly helpful to society. ;)

The definition I grew up with is:
- Nerds have one favorite subject they know a lot about; so there is comic nerds, music nerds, sports nerds, science nerds, etc.
- Geeks are computer nerds and/or internet freaks. They know just as much about the newest micro processor as about the newest meme.

And that is pretty much the definition I am sticking to.

Which still means that a comic writer is not by any means a geek. ;)

2010-06-26 09:47 pm UTC (link)
Your definition and mine are not too far apart, really - it's just that my definition expands 'geek' into other fields of scientific study as well.
And yes, of course nerds can be helpful to society. What I meant was that their nerdish tendencies, in and of themselves, are not useful. One can be, say, a Pulitzer-prize winning author as well as being obsessed with Superman, but it's the former part that will do good in the world, not the latter.
And I never said they were.
