I know that it's not One Perfect Moment Week until Sunday, but you have my attention now. This is from Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Steve McNiven's superlative Wolf at the Door, the first collection in their Marvel Knights Four run. It appears regularly on Idea102 because it's just so bloody good looking.

Context: Reed, Sue, Ben, Franklin and Franklin's friends are camping in New Jersey's pine barrens. Aliens are kidnapping cattle and also two documentary makers and one of Franklin's friends. Reed and Ben go to save them, while Sue protects the kids. Reed ends up trapped on the alien ship which leads us to Escape Scenario 63

Perfect because the 4 of them know each other SO well

Perfect because Ben Grimm will take on a spaceship to save people and to help his oldest friend.

Not exactly perfect because of the psychic nosebleeds, but perfect because RAS understands that Sue Storm is the most powerful member of the Fantastic Four.

Perfect because Sue Storm's powers will fuck you up

Perfect because Sue Storm doesn't NEED her powers to fuck you up

Perfect because of comic timing

Perfect because RAS just gets the Fantastic Four. In fact, the only other Fantastic Four panels that are as good is Waid's scene where Reed is telling Valeria their origin story.

The entire Mavel Knights Four run is basically a very long, well written love letter to Susan Storm. You should seriously consider getting it.

MK 4 was such a great title all around, it pretty much single-handedly rekindled my love affair with the franchise. Which is good news for everyone, because the current run is absolutely amazing.

It's seriously one of, if not the best comic Marvel is putting out right now and woefully underappreciated, here and in general. FF hit the ground running with Solve Everything and has only gotten more awesome with Prime Elements. It's exactly the right mix of brilliant high concept, quiet character moments and optimistic vision a good FF comic needs.
The only thing that mars my enjoyment slightly is that Hickman apparently isn't able to draw it all by himself. Edwards trying really hard to by Brian Hitch and failing horribly about 25% of the time isn't really doing it for me.

PS: It just occured to me that Ben's actions in the Moloid city and Sue's with the Atlanteans both make for good Pefrect Moments. Same as with Reed's speech at that summit.

Hickman's never drawn any of it.

Damn, I was absolutely ceratin I had written Eaglesham. Which is obviously what I meant. Epting is a great artist and can keep a deadline, but I'm not convinced he can pull off all the high-concept weirdness Hickman packs into the book as well as Eaglesham does. Epting's work is way more character focused and down to earth.

Hickman drawing FF as well would probably blow my mind completely, but on the other hand the book would never, ever come out then.

YES. It's practically my favorite book being published at Marvel at the moment. :D

It's the most "Marvel" of Marvel titles Marvel has published in a long time.

What backwoods corner of the universe are these aliens from. Anyone who's had contact with the Kree, Shi'ar, Skrull or any of the other major interstellar civilizations should know by now that YOU DON'T FUCK WITH EARTH.

And any race that's interacted with the Kree or the Skrull will also be told that YOU DON'T FUCK WITH THE FANTASTIC FOUR.

I believe Agent Brand and Beast used that very argument in the recent SWORD series.

See also the Doctor's little monologue on a similar theme in "The Pandorica Opens" (Which I won't spoil as it's not screened in the States yet)

Yes, I love Eleven's 'you're welcome to try' speeches.

Someone should put up warning signs around the solar system.

Well, yes, but all those interstellar civilizations KEEP fucking with Earth, so presumably they haven't learned their lesson yet.

While I remember reading this and agree, it's really really good, I just re-read Planetary over the weekend and am comparing the Captain Ertasz The Four to their originals, the FF.

I wonder if Snow and the gang would be able to beat the real FF? Because The Four was criminally incompetant at times. Sure, it makes for great story telling, but they did a lot of stupid things.

I would bet not. The Four were, as noted, both criminally incompetent at times and, and this is far, far more important, never really a 'family'.

The large part of the FF's strengths are in the fact that they work so very, very well together. They know what everyone will do, without needing to check or tell them. They support each other, etc etc.

The Four would be unconscious, tied up, and the subject of a peer-reviewed paper on transdimensional physics before lunch.

Once again proving that Sue is one of the most powerful characters in the MU for someone who doesn't have reality warping powers.

I'm not sure that her fields aren't reality warps of some kind. She's one of the few that can get a hold of a Celestial's armor, and a lot of heavies have commented that her abilities interact with some very basic physical processes.

Hey there! I'm working on a blog profile of Sue, and I was wondering if I could use part of this scan. I'd be happy to credit you, of course. Please let me know!
