And yet, the dress remains the same! *shudder*

It was designed by a real-life designer too! Willi Smith was his name apparently.

Yep! Tragically, he died in April of that year, and the annual came out in September or October, meaning he never lived to see his comic book appearance. :(

Oh rats. I think it's pretty cool though that his creation got to be seen by a different audience than normal, and is perhaps more immortalized this way than an actual dress. Hmm tho there might have been a real dress made from this design too, I don't know.

He was only 39 and died of AIDS complications. Not that death is ever a joyous occasion, but it's a particular tragedy in his case. :(

Since you ask, there was at least one dress that was made for real, as seen here. I don't know if Willi Smith had anything to do with it, though, it could very well have been a tailor making a replica from the art.

Aw, I googled for some of his designs and they were really cute, and maybe even "hip" in the good old days. Definitely sad that he died so young and with that potential.

Oh, the dress does look good (from what can be seen with the video quality) though I'm not a fan of the huge arm flaps, which actually looks rather different from the comic.

Yeah, those are weird. In fairness, it's a bit hard to judge with the video quality.

I believe Smith was named as the designer in the Newspaper Strip, the premise was that MJ did some modeling for him and out of friendship/owed her a favor made the dress for her.

So Smith was credited and it was meta, nice. I liked when MJ had a bunch of friends in the business. Which reminds me that Hobgoblin was in the business, haha.

He was credited in the wedding annual, too! MJ gets a last-minute present from him and it's the dress. :D
