This is from Amazing Spider-Man #638 by Quesada and Paolo Rivera.

On the day of their wedding, Peter gets knocked out fighting the criminal from the first look who was released from the cop's car by the red bird.

Yeah, cause it would totally be out of the question for them to just... I don't know, TRY AGAIN.

I mean I'm sure MJ would understand that Peter got knocked the fuck out.

Also, you know they just threw that MJ part in to give them a loophole, because you just KNOW Mephisto is gonna fuck with Peter again.

Hmmm, while I agree, I don't think it's neccessarily *implausible* that they end up delaying the marriage... And then one or the other simply dropping the idea. I have seen it happen with acquintances (they're all set to get married, planning and all, then something deflates the plans and it just sort of never happens)

Especially since it's a pretty stark reminder (for MJ) of precisely what being married to a superhero would entail, and even back then she WAS pretty jittery about the entire thing. (Now, partially because back then the writers wanted an out)

If it was just time damage or something like that that would be one thing. But they are the second part of a Faustian narrative, making this the portion where the Faust realizes what he has gained is naught but ashes to him and the price is far too high. You can't make a deal with the devil and have it come out well. It violates all the rules of narrative and the fundamental character of Mephisto as the devil as well as undermining the most heroic Faust.

Besides, the whole leave him alone opens itself up to a rather worse interpretation. That Peter will never have a relationship that works, that his friends will abandon him, that he will live and die alone. That would be far more in keeping with something I would expect of the Mephisto.

Whoa, that's actually really clever.

A guaranteed sign that it's in no way what's going to happen.

Can't help but think that somehow, they would want Mephisto to be sincere in this, just as a way of underscoring it all somehow.
