Big warning to writers here:

Once you do something for plot-reasons instead of characterization-reasons, the resulting damage requires more and more justification that then causes more logical flaws that leads to more justification until the story isn't about anything but attempting to hold together in the face of so many logical inconsistencies.

Eventually what you're left with is a load-bearing element that's more spackle than wall, and the whole thing falls down.
