So "Second Coming" is over, and the various series go their separate ways after three months of conjoined bliss. The New Mutants as a group kind of dropped out of the picture toward the end of it, with Cannonball getting a surprising amount to do in a tie-in miniseries, which also figures into the plot of this issue since it picks up on the Magik/Pixie tensions.
So, this is one of those after-action issues where everybody goes on vacation (foolishly; the only thing worse for a mutant than being at X-Men headquarters is not being at X-Men headquarters). In this instance, SC was hard on the team (Cannonball initially offers Cyclops his resignation as leader, thinking he did a bad job; Cyclops says no), so Cannonball wants to get everybody rejuvenated. They fly to a ranch or something in the middle of the desert. Sunsport wants to know what they're going to do in such a dull-looking spot.

They do, while the villains of the piece, a group of army commandos who got stuck in Limbo for twenty years (Limbo-time) and now have demon-powers, and who want to capture Magik because they think she's a threat, go on the hunt.

But it's a fakeout. They're actually sneaking up on Pixie, who also left Utopia, to steal her Soul Knife for use against Magik.
