As someone else noted, DC: The New Frontier is full of perfect moments. The Silver Age Flash gets a couple of them. Now, normally the one that comes to mind is his initial appearance where he goes up against Captain Cold, but while that's pretty awesome too, here's another one that, frankly, I like better.

From DC: The New Frontier #5. The big bad has revealed itself, a sentient alien mass masquerading as an island called the Centre. It's heading inland, bringing monstrous death and destruction with it and finally all the heroes are united in an effort to stop its murderous rampage. Except for the Flash, who has gone into hiding because of government efforts to capture him. But you can't keep Barry Allen out of the fight...

Go get 'em, tiger.

But even with the heroes united, the sheer size of the Centre and its invulnerability presents a problem. So in DC: The New Frontier #6

I love the fact that they turned the flaw in Ray Palmer's old size-shrinking experiments into an asset. But the question is, how do you expose something the size of the Center to the ray all at once? Turns out it's a question of speed. So there's only one man for the job.

That alone would be Flash's badass declaration, but his moment is still to come.

I read somewhere once that kids liked the Flash because it was a super-power they could relate to - just running really, really fast. Cooke shows us just how awesome that simple ability alone really is. Neil Patrick Harris did a great job voicing Barry in the movie.

That, to me, is where heroic comics really shine for me. Being able to take a simple ability and do something totally unexpected with it, and that's what they managed to do here.

Related to that is the willingness to go in and do whatever it takes to save the day, and when you feel you're about to give up the ghost, you just push harder.

Well, to a certain extent that goes back to his heroic death in the original Crisis. For all his special power and all, he always saw himself as just a guy who could run, and he went up against those odds, knowing they were massively against him. That's a hero right there.

I actually like Barry as the Flash, although that aspect makes me question them bringing him back.

What aspect? I like Barry as the Flash too, though I wish the ongoing monthly will focus on the other Flashes after the current arc is done.

The fact that his death was a meaningful sacrifice that was allowed to stand for a long time. Even longer than Supergirl. I'd rather not see that lessened by having Barry on the same resurrection cycle as everyone else, just with a longer "away" time.

I like when the docs had their BFF moment, I was almost expecting them to clink their pipes.

Also, I bet Bart would say to the other superhero kids, "My grandpa raced around a primal-brain monster using a shrink ray."

Ah. I like to see it not as a lessening of his sacrifice, but rather as the universe giving him a second chance after all the stuff he'd been through. Even if it was by a creepy stalker fan-boy from the future who wanted to kill him because he hated the fact that Barry became a martyr after he died.

"Yeah, all that WEIRD stuff, and the whole murder case, and being trapped by the Anti-Monitor and Psycho Pirate for months and forcing yourself to sacrifice yourself to save all of existence... Here's a second chance to be with your family again. Just try to live through Flashpoint, though. OK?"

Besides, Supergirl didn't really come back, she just got totally rebooted after a never ending conga line of wanna be's.

From the sounds of it, they are going to have another on-going that's going to focus on the rest of the Flash family called Flash: Speed Force--sort-of the GLC to Flash's GL.

This, right there, is what made me fall in love with New Frontier's Barry Allen. Because I was mostly a Geoff Johns/Scott Kolins' Wally West fan (still am, actually) before, and I hadn't read much Barry Allen - I read the issues in the wrong order, too... But ooh boy. That's good stuff. Summarises exactly why I love the Flash in all his incarnations :o)

Worse IMO, when they did bring him back, they had to complicate things and saddle him with some angst about DEAAAAD PARENT rather than just leave him with the pure good-hearted earnestness that was one of his strongest qualities.

I cried a lot, so there.

I love this series. Everything about it. Even little touches like Diana's pose in the "BOOM" panel, and being there to catch him.
