Wow, this is great! I haven't read Spiderman in many, many years. I didn't know that Aunt May ever knew that Peter was Spiderman.

From what I gather, 100% of his awesomeness exists in Avengers and Marvel Adventures. The mainstream titles don't even contain trace amounts.

It was revealed fairly early on in JMS' run on ASM that she's known it pretty much since he started, if I remember right.

You might be mixing up the 'death' of Aunt May years back, where she told Peter she had known for years, but denied it.

That might have happened then, but I know I saw during the JMS/JRJr. run a whole issue dedicated to Peter and May talking about it, with her saying that she already knew.

In Amazing Spider-Man 38 where she shows ep holding his costume they have "the talk" she says she knew he'd been hiding something ever since his teenage years from her. She figured he was gay. A sensitive boy, not interested in sports, always playing with girls. She thought he was hiding something in the closet, perhaps a scarf, she just didn't know it was a super hero costume.

Although there's always this bittersweet feeling whenever I see really awesome stories like this that happened JUST before OMD.

awesome MJ stories too! i firmly believe that Quesada did this just to prove a point. he said they could not tell good stories with a married Peter Parker, and then gave us the BEST and most touching MJ/Peter stories ever made, and then smashed them....

This was when he was suped-up. Poison daggers in his arms, organic web shooters, a suit that made him stronger, faster, heightened his senses even more, and even let him glide like some spiders do. Yeah, he was asking for a massive downgrade and to be whipped by JQ.

I really did like the story possibilities opened up by a) not treating May like an idiot, and b) having her know.

I don't read the current book so I'm not criticizing it. I just miss the former possibilities.

May at her awesomest. Definitely one of the best things to come out of JMS' run was his depiction of May and it was great that other writers kept that quality up.

Aunt May was transformed from a liability that Peter had to work around to a three-dimensional character under JMS. It's possible she was before, but I wasn't following then.

Quite possibly my most favorite May moment was when she found Peter in his costume, asleep and wiped out from a battle. She may have suspected, but now it was totally confirmed. She then spent the entire issue dealing with her feelings about it, featuring the famous scene in the library where she hones in on JJJ's anti-Spidey bias.

Yes, yes, yes.

There's much to criticize about JMS's run, especially the contrived editorially mandated stuff, but when he was on form there was just some wonderful stuff. Moving May into position as an ally rather than a hindrance was definitely the latter.

I wonder if that particular version of the Spidey outfit even exists anymore after OMD? Not that I would grieve particularly if it didn't, but it would be interesting if Spidey kept it around for when he needed that extra edge.

Nah, it belongs to the Scarlet Spider(s) now - the suit belonged to Tony Stark, so he gave it to the Michael Van Patrick clones in Avengers: The Initiative.
