I think this mini was where Ra's learnt that the Joker is in some sick way Batmans true equal.

Talia should be grateful Ra's didn't make her marry him then.

I've never been sure, is there really an advantage to being an unpredictable chess player versus a seasoned player?

It's possible to be an unpredictable seasoned player, but being an unpredictable rookie will not. You still need to know what you're doing even if you play unconventionally.

This I thinks works because Joker is a master as well, just with a different style.

Yeah, put me in the "doesn't buy this game" camp. The point of the Joker is that people are always trying to play chess with him, and he's always playing Calvinball. His great genius is that his mind is completely unconstrained by ANY rules, and he's always coming up with some crazy-ass shit no sane person could have even imagined.

Joker-chess would be where any piece can move anywhere at any time, and an unknown percentage of pieces are equipped with concealed guns and explosives. And even that's limiting it.

Yeah, but as they say, 'you have to know the rules before you can break them'. Joker may specialize in playing his own game, but that doesn't mean he can't play other games in his own unique fashion.

think of it this way, who would even CONSCIDER that the Joker would play a straight game of chess?

i hate the way fictional chess games are portrayed, and i disbelieve that the Joker could beat Ra's.

It's better than Code Geass. Lead with your King indeed. Symbolism only works if it's plausible people.

Joker is an actual genius, though, and could've played countless games with the other big minds at Arkham.

What's up with Ra's's...er...Mr. Ghul's face in that last panel? Looks like he has a tumor hanging on his cheek. Or is it just swollen from a fight?

And this just reminded me of ANOTHER OPM:

Joker vs. Impulse in World Without Adults (I can't remember if that's the title; it was a prelude to Young Justice).

Impulse 50 had Joker vs Batman and Impulse.
Is that the one? Or is there a whole nother issue I need to scour the greater Los Angeles area for because Joker/IMpulse always sounds delightful.

No, it was a two-part mini-series starring Impulse, Superboy and Robin (before Young Justice).

Ah ha. I just looked it up on Wikipedia. It was called "World Without Grown-Ups".

Hang on a second, how do you remove your king from check and mate the other side by just moving your bishop?

This is an interesting scene, because Ras does not normally socialize with the Gotham crowd. If we didn't already know that Joker was the big boogeyman of them all, this would prove it - he may technically be just an insane clown, but an immortal world conqueror respects him enough to associate with him.
