Bat/Cat Love

A quick note: I first sought out this issue (Batman 392) after reading about it here: No Place for a Girl: Batman Comics of the 1980s

It's a cute story, in which Batman and Catwoman try to have a date, but keep being interrupted by crimes. Because, you know, it's Gotham. They try to have dinner, go dancing, walk in the park, but everywhere they turn, the city needs help. The running gag is that she keeps using pieces of her cat-o-nine to tie up the bad guys. Meanwhile, Bullock is arguing with Gordon about how bad the Catwoman is.

The lonely gods page, by the way, is quite good, but I feel it elides some of the stronger work done on Selina's character in the mid-to-late seventies (It was a mixed bag, but the stronger stuff is there.) particularly by Dennis O'Neil, who took pains to bring her into a more independent modernized version under his long, definitive tenure as a Bat-Writer. (O'neil's Batman actually declared clearer feelings for HER than she did for him, come to think of it. )

I think it's far from complete, and I don't agree with some of the points and particularly the conclusions about why things changed for women characters in comics, especially in the 80s/90s but it's ... it's a start.

I *LOVE* Dennis O'Neil's work on both her, Batman, Talia, gosh, Matches...

Dennis O'Neil's Batman is my favorite.

Same for his Selina and Talia.

So far the closest we've had is Heart of Hush where Bats admitted that Selina is the only woman who he really loves/loved. It's aww-worthy and some of the last good Batman before the whole 'Fight For the Cowl' shenanigans.

They will, in the end. There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that twenty five years from now, they'll wind up together. But for as long as comics are being published, I want to see that game of cat and bat ;)

Tooo damn cuuute. They've made Batman so dysfunctional lately (and also, um, dead) that I can't picture him acting like this...especially sharing pizza with Gordon and Catwoman, which just seems like a nice little touch of comradery. I guess it's that he's gone to such great lengths to build up his mystique (to the point where he's an urban legend) that he wouldn't do something as...human, as sitting down and eating with someone, in his Batman identity at least. Well...maybe in the Watchtower, or the Batcave, or some other private super-space, but not in a "mundane" location like Gordon's office.

But anyway, this whole thing was just so sweet. Especially the panel with Batman putting his cape around her (incidentally, Catwoman with a cape just seems odd).

Heh. I know. How lucky I am, to live in a town that has an alternate bookstore/bar ratio. People can just drink and drink and drink and then go read...

I actually think he's a little too ... casual? is maybe the word I want--here, but I'm okay with it, because it's fun and I think current Batman can lean way too far the other way into being somebody so closed off that you can't imagine how he could inspire teams of followers, like Dick, Babs, Tim, Jason, Cass, the Outsiders, etc. I just think Batman as urban legend is... silly. He goes out there, in one city, every night. I think people might have had some run-ins.

Batman, Catwoman and Gordon all sitting in a police office eating pizza to me is the equivalent of finding a large chunk of unearthed awesome and tapping directly into it. I also love the forehead slap at the man robbing the store, just a perfectly captured moment.

Gotham City, for all its problems, has a place where you can get pizza 24 hours a day. Nice.

This must be one of the reasons that I like the broody kid and the purple kid having a Zesti after breaking up a convenience store robbery, and broody has to remind purple to pay up before they leave... *double facepalm*
