I know in the realm of superheroes, it makes sense, but I've never been a fan of the "shapeshifter/robot" conclusion to a threatened secret identity. Always thought it'd be more fun to stretch it out and see how far it goes.

For example, there was this GREAT idea brought up by - of all people - Jeph Loeb in his short Superman run. A photographer gets a super-close up of Superman's hand while he's rescuing someone...and catches his wedding band. Fans speculated for weeks on how it would be resolved. And for awhile, it looked like it might be an interesting subplot...until maybe two months later, in another non-Loeb written Superman title, the League saved his butt by announcing it was a new type of communicator they were testing and all held up their own wedding bands.

So yeah, rant aside? I can never complain about a M'Gann appearance. *grin*

	I like the twistin this case is they know the target might guess the shapeshifting thing, so M'gann's really just there to take the bullet, and Tim's planning on running with the fake injury for a year to pull it off. (Reply to this) (Thread from start) (Parent)

	They're faking* it for the tabloids and Vicki Vale. *For some definition of faking; if they ever have a serious talk about whether or not they have a relationship, they might actually have a relationship. Would it really have hurt just one of them (Dick, Alfred) to just go to talk to Vicki like Dick suggested they do at the very beginning of the issue? Was this whole ruse necessary? It's not like Bruce's civilian ex-girlfriends haven't been discreet with the "secret" before (see Silver St. Cloud or Shondra Kinsolving or even Sasha Bourdeux in a way) and the fact that Vicki's been sitting on it this long should prove she's probably doing it for Bruce's sake. But no, they have to go through this whole rigamarole (with Tim on crutches for a year) just to prove some point?

The thing is, though, that, as was also pointed out, Vicki, unlike the others, is a position to ruin their careers if she so chooses - and while such a thing has generally been unlikely, the Bat-team is rather unstable right now, and have to cover their tracks. They've already got an unstable criminal masquerading as Bruce and Damian, little psycho that he is, in the position of Robin - the possibilities for something going disastrously wrong and causing mammoth PR problems are rather high at the moment, and if it does, Vicki may decide that they've crossed a line and need to be brought to justice, which means bye-bye secret identities, hello cops tracking them down. It's perfectly understandable that they're taking the circuitous route - they can't AFFORD to trust Vicki, much as they might like to.

	The dialogue in the panel posted, out of context, is a little misleading. He, as Tim Wayne, threatened to expose a couple of corrupt cops, which, as he was hoping they would do, led them to hiring an assassin. Also, we're finally getting around to the Captain Boomerang side plot. Fascinating.
