So Jason is training under a martial arts expert who he later finds is trafficking 10-year-old kids in a sex trade.

He kills the man by poisoning his energy drink and brings the kids to the British Embassy. Meanwhile, Talia is stalling him from his mission against Bruce. He sits down and talks with her afterwards.

It was the right writer who made the statements about his current status, unfortunately. My suspicion is that he was prolly reacting a little snarkily to something he'd been handed down from editorial, that's really how it seemed to come across.

Oh yeah, there was definitely an initial shock when I first heard it. It was really only after that wore off that I started wondering about the tone of it.

Which statements about his current status?

In one of the previous issues, Ra's al Ghul says that the Lazarus Pit can make someone insane "months or even years later". I suspect that line was a set-up to retcon some of the weirder Jason stuff as being delayed Lazarus Pit insanity.

I'm having trouble finding a full transcript, but during SDCC's Batman Panel, a fan asked if Jason might be getting his own book, and Winick answered that "villains don't get their own books."

I think the exact phrase he used was "bad guy," actually, not villain.

I think he meant the same thing though. DC seems to have a push towards Jason as a villain in current canon. It seems very odd as most fans don't even seem to regard him as such. They get the difference and understand these are literary archetypes we're working with here.

This next bit really makes me laugh... the post-card is hilarious.

I just got a postcard in the mail, which apes one of the Jason Todd covers, the Red Hood covers. What they did is they have Jason Todd holding the Red Hood. And in the original picture, there’s a reflection of Batman’s face and actually they superimposed my face in the reflection, saying, “No, I’m not a villain, make me a hero again!”

But see, I never thought Huntress was a villain, nor is Manhunter. And Huntress killed members of the mafia.
Granted, they aren't as antagonistic towards the Batfamily as Jason is, but that never made them villains in my eyes. (ie Jason fights the Batfam and taunts them)
