The art in this looks really good. The back-and-forth between the Spiders is cute! There's a lot of confusing stuff going on in Ultimate-Land. So this is "Ultimate Mystery," and not "Ultimate Spider-Man?" I thought the idea was to simplify everything. Don't mind me.

Jessica seems to think Peter's strait, so her sexuality doesn't seem to be totally based on his.

Yes, part of the Ultimate Clone saga, one of the various clones of Peter had their Y changed to an X... which one would imagine would fairly significantly change one's genetic code to the point you're not technically a clone but what else are you going to call her.

She actually has all of Peter's memories and was artifically aged to his age... even though genetics don't work that way. Anyway after the Clone Saga she struck out on her own.

I just found it this morning actually. It's at the end of the first story in MAFF Volume 6, so that would be issue *gets up and looks* #21, page 21, the next-to-last panel. Johnny posted an embarrassing picture of Ben online, and Ben retaliated.

I'm not sure I can scan it, but you can ask for it next request day.

Johnny's already blown Peter's mind by claiming he kissed Spider-woman and she liked it. Peter I think decided to put it in "Johnny tells bullshit lies" territory.

I can't decide if that would have been the perfect time to bring it up, or the worst possible time....

I guess it depends on whether 'dude, you (sort of) kissed me' broke Johnny's mind too much for him to jump to '...and (sort of) you liked it'.

My wife and I are biologists and we just talked about this. All they would have had to do is to take out his Y chromosome and copy Peter's X chromosome meaning that 45 of his 46 chromosomes would be present in Jessica. So, while I agree not a real clone, she would be very similar.

I admit I can't wrap my head around how the memories and aging would work.

IIRC, the memories aren't actually a consequence of the cloning, but another process the clones were subjected to.

You know, there's a reason why artists are told it's a bad idea to have body parts up against the edges of a panel, and not to cut across joints, and that first panel is an education in why. Seriously, it looks like he's been crushed into a box and is trying to get out.

Kind of the point, though. He's frustrated, and trying to escape from the scene, so why not use the layout to express that? If it had been me I'd have included his shoulder and the web-line in that overlapping, but, hey, artists be artists.

Bendis is one of those writers who isn't afraid of subtly laughing at himself - though this is a slightly more complicated dig at the ridiculousness of Jessica freaking Drew being the best hiding place for the mastermind behind Secret Invasion.

I always like the dialogue by Bendis in Ultimate Spidey. This is a good example. Hell, I even really enjoyed the last issue of New Avengers. Its just some of Bendis' Avengers plotting that he is weak on.

Anyway, I think it's probably supposed to be implied that they're talking while swinging... perhaps a splash page of a single image wasn't the best way to convey that, though.
