A bit of Scarlet Traces: the Great Game
Aug. 10th, 2010 01:17 amFrom Issue 3
Scarlet Traces and its sequel, the Great Game, are the two follow-up storylines that expand on the adaption of Ian Edginton and D'Israeli's version of War of the World.
Taking place in a parallel world were the British Empire has taken advantage of abandoned Martian technology to increase their grip on the world, much intrigue abounds as conspiracies and the like occur in the years that follow the Martians' attack in the 1890s.
Here is a part from the Great Game, where the heroine, a photojournalist called Charlotte Hemming, to investigate a mystery involving troops vanishing during the British counter-invasion of Mars...

Note: the Great Game takes place some thirty or forty years after the initial invasion of Earth, so it isn't as if they cobbled up interplanetary spacecraft up out of a couple of tin baths and a coal-furnace.
