Zachary Zatara, teen heart-throb, stage magician, and master transmogrifer (of non-humans), has been in comics for a few years now, and yet never had any substantial interaction with his cousin, Zatanna Zatara.

That changes now.


Our epic heroine returns from her victory against the Royal Flush Gang, tending to one of her rabbits, and rehearsal, to sense CHAOS coming from her hotel room!

And what sort of chaos does she find?


"Excuse me, I'm looking for my cousin. An oily little weasel named Zach..."

After the polite approach fails, and resorting to some judiciously applied pest removal (the pests being the partiers) via turning girls into birds and insinuations of being good with frogs as well, the suite is hers once more.

Or IS it?




Interesting to note that he asks how to learn that trick. Possibly implying that it's just a matter of further practice before he can affect people as well?


I could've sworn he had blue eyes before....

Anyways, YAY! More Zach!
Now if only his appearances in Coven (which I need to catch up on posting) were as consistent with his personality... -.-

Zatanna's eye color in this is quite aqua, I notice. Maybe their eyes are picking up colors from the yellowish room.

Bunny usually looks more distinct, and the female tux is pretty standard. But yeah, artist is clearly still feeling out the cast.

So the more I read this and the art the more I questioned Bruce's sanity that he shot her down... seriously.

Yeah--only excuse I can think of in-story is that it was around the same time that he was supposed to be "courting" Jezebel Jet and being around Zee would blow that out of the water and take away the chance to get at the group after him.

Other than that? Yeah, definite sign of insanity.

I am of the opinion that if Batman (or just Bruce Wayne) turned on the charm he could probably have any girl in the DCU. I mean just look how many seem to be attracted to him despite the fact that he blows them off and acts like a misanthropic jerk (or at least he did).

But yeah I liked Zee and Bruce. They interact well with each other and each time he acts like a Batjerk she can just teleport herself back to Vegas and Frisco to get away. I read somewhere that Dini said he's not going to have Bruce in the Zatanna series for something like "two years" (if it lasts that long) but said he doesn't mind if other writers pick up on the ship (which the old Superman/Batman writers used to do quite a bit).

I dunno, he turned down Wonder Woman. After that, I don't think it would be too hard to turn down Zee, as cool as she is.

She is the best suited for the title. From what I have seen she has out sorcered most if not all magic users in the DCU. I can't even think of Dr. Fate as out doing her. Shes no Strange but she seems to be the closest to that weight class without being a god or cosmic.

Normally she isn't, at least not the stronger iterations of Fate, but she has done stuff like beat Zor, an old Spectre foe.

Currently Fate's a newbie who has NO idea of the extent of his powers.

He's only fairly recently gotten a handle on consistently using the abilities he knows about.

I think 'FWB', more than 'couple'. I definitely get the idea they're sleeping together, but it's obviously not an exclusive relationship.

Also, how was Zach using his powers to 'show off for the Las Vegas brat pack'? He was throwing an ordinary party; I didn't see anything magical about it.

Zach and Bunny together? But in all other portrayals, Zach's been just short of an abusive boss to Bunny.

Also, whatever happened to Misty from Seven Soldiers? Be nice to see her make an appearance here.
