A question, sort of posed in Batman and Robin Adventures #6

The cover introduces the story nicely...

Gotham, night time, and a hero clad in red yellow and green interrupts a robbery in progress, he puts up a good showing against the muscle-bound thug, but whilst the inital assault is good, the follow through is not what one might expect from the Teen Wonder and the thug manages to get the drop on him...

Freckles? And brunette (Is there a male equivalent of brunette?) surely faithful readers this can't be our beloved hero? Could that magazine cover be a clue as to what's going on?

Meanwhile, in stately Wayne Manor, millionaire playboy Bruce Wayne, tries to console his ward, Dick Grayson, who is less than pleased with the newspaper revelation. Bruce is more amused than anything...

Alfred interrupts to mention the Batsignal is lit... and when they get there, Gordon and Bullock show them a message which has been delivered to the HQ.

Gordon has supplied the ransom money from the police evidence locker and with the proper tracers planted, Batman prepares to set off to the rendezvous...

When suddenly... there is a dazzling burst of light... magnesium flare bright and a new player enters the field...

Well, that might be the shortest Robin career in history... well, you might think so, but the story is young yet...

Oh, and I wasn't sure Carrie needed a reference considering the average level of comic book geek here, but just in case.. a redheaded feamle Robin called Carrie, could it be.... Nah, just a coincidence I'm sure! ;)

Now, clearly there is no way this can end anything other than well, right? Right?

Whilst Batman goes off to the rendezvous (alone, as specified in the ransom note), he sends Robin.. the REAL one, off on a search of his own. The picture of the kid has Victorian style window in the background, and one with a broken pane, There's really only one place in Gotham where you find Victorian style architecture, Cabbagetown (No, I don't know why it's called that either) and he sends Dick off to look for that window... Sheesh! But them's the breaks when you're Robin

Meanwhile IN Cabbagetown... our hapless Robin wannabe is actually doing an admirable job of keeping the deception going (or is maybe seriously delusional)

Ouch! Let me make it clear I do not advocate violence to Robins... A little perilous captivity? Sure. Exotic deathtraps? Absolutely! But causally beating them up, that's a no-no...

Back in Gotham, another wannabe (The one in the utility jacket seen in crowd scene) see's Batman arcing overhead and determines to get his attention with one of his gadgets, the "trusty Robin-flare gun".... Alas he uses it in the middle of Gothams's equivlaent of Times Square/Piccadilly Circus/Akihabara... and the aiming system isn't perfect. Let's just say that adding a flare gun projectile to the "Kookie Kola" electric light display isn't the best idea...

Well on the plus side, he attracted Batman's attention... on the negative side he attracted Batman's attention...

I like the idea that the average beat-cop wouldn't be sure what Robin even looks like.

Meanwhile, in Cabbageton again.. Robin is checking the ohot against windows... when he has a surprise visitor too..

Yeah, that won't piss Dick off or anything, will it?

Batman returns to the Batmobile, but is ambushed.. sort of by yet another Robin (Not sure if this in an homage to Damon Marlon (Thanks [personal profile] jetblack927 for the correction) Wayans nearly being Robin in Batman Returns, but whatever). This one is determined to show he has the proper moves to be Robin.. skulking, stealth, some degree of martial arts skills.

Only ONE Robin is allowed to grin smugly at Batman and to be honest kid, you're not him.

Heh, I love that moment.. There IS a parachute included in the seat, so he's all right, but I leave you to ponder why Batman has automatic manacles on the Batmobile seat Dick usually sits in...

The Road Rage Rampage of Robins continues on Cabbagetown... (and I always loved the BTAS Modernist/Art Deco bat-cycles)

Luckily, the bikes have skidded to a halt outside a house which has nice windows, one of which has a cracked window pane.

Back in Gotham, Batman makes it to the rendezvous point, but is interrupted by Carrie making another appearance (Her dad is a councilman, so he pulled strings to get her out of her holding cell). Though Batman tells her to get lost, the kidnapper spots her, and believing that Batman has broken the instruction to come alone, tells Batman that the Robin he has will shortly be better named Dodo (Okay, that jokes not in the comic, but I like to think it would have been)

"... we've never met before!"

There now follows my favourite Batman line for ten years in either direction (and counting), any medium, any incarnation...

So Dick gives them the exclusive that "NO ONE replaces Robin!" (and somewhere a crystal ball showing episodes of the New Superman/Batman Adventures shatters in pure irony) and so the next issue of the National Insider has the headline

"Batman and Robin secretly CIA spies"

One has to imagine the sound of facepalming coming from the Batcave at that point...
