30 Days of Scans meme Day 4: The Sandman, Wesley Dodds

Oh yeah, warning: racism.

Wesley Dodds is, in the current chronology of the DCU, the first modern superhero, and was considered by Batman to be an even greater detective than he was.

Driven by disturbing prophetic dreams, Dodds would march out into the night to try and prevent and solve crimes with nothing more than his wits, his gasgun and mask to prevent himself from being effected by his own gas' side effects.

He was assisted by his long time romantic partner Dian Belmont, who helped him solve crimes and drove his car until her nephew, Sandy Hawkins, stole her job.

If you can pick up the series Sandman Mystery Theatre, it's a good noir detective comic that also shows the approach of superheroes into the DCU, replacing the regular pulp influenced characters of old. Plus it deals with contempory issues in an interesting way as well.

Here is a section from Sandman Midnight Theatre, the joint Matt Wagner/Neil Gaiman written storyline that connected Gaiman's Sandman series with Wagner's.

Dodds is in the UK investigating a blackmailling ring originating from a manor owned by some "so-called magicians" and cultists. While searching for the safe that contains their blackmail material, he comes across something odd in the basement...




And from Sandman Mystery Theatre 40, here is Dian coming to visit Wesley as he watches over a rabbi that is being targetted by some gangsters, and makes a shocking (for the time period) confession to her,



Actually, if you bring back Wesley could you bring back Dian too? As her death was one of the contributing factors to him throwing himself off a cliff at the beginning of the Jack Knight etc. incarnation of the JSA, as well as protecting the identity of the new Dr Fate.

Perhaps the explanation is in the "There is some of me in you." part. He cannot cross the boundary, so perhaps Wesley can't either because of the bit of Dream in him.
