30 Days of Scans! Day 6: Power or ability you'd like to steal

This is my first post. So if I do anything wrong, tell me and I'll fix it:)
I don't have a scanner, so I collect these pictures on internet.

My reason for Jack Hawksmoor's ability is that, when I tried to create a character, I actually came up with one whose blood can allow her to connect to the land spirit and control all kind of material and things, especially man-made stuff that are common in a city. I love mother nature, but at the same time big cities never fail to amaze me. Jumping through landscapes are one of my biggest dreams.
So you can see, when I first know Authority, it's like watching my dream partially come true!


I also adore the idea of cities having personality, and wish someday DC can use this idea and bring up city spirit of Metropolis or Gotham, or even call up the spirit of Bludhaven from "death".

That is a fascinating ability, though rather.. wide in terms of possible manifestations perhaps.

Gotham does sort of have a spirit, a fairly recent character called Millicent Mayne seems to have a connection with the city itself.. She was a beautiful actress who Two-Face apparently disfigured (We've never seen the results, but she always wears a veil), and who has somehow become linked to Gotham as a result.

Yeah, I'm still working on that and see if I could write a story of it.
And which story is Millicent Mayne in? I want to see if I could get reach of it and check it out. I only read Gotham spirit in fanfics before. :D

I always loved this power, but not always the way it manifested.

Writers have used the whole idea that Gotham is a living city so to speak. Milligan has, as has Morrison to a lesser extent.

His powers always reminded me about an old Sandman short about a what would ever happen if the "sleeping city" ever woke up. It was quite amazing.

I havn't had a chance to read those. Need to check that out someday.
I want to see Gotham's spirit rise and kick something's ass shouting DO NOT TOUCH MY BATS. Oh but that may not be organic enough for a bat story I know. :P

Yay, Jack Hawksmoor :) Not only are his powers really cool, but he's a snappy dresser too. You can't go wrong with the film noir white shirt & black suit. And bare feet. Obviously.

For anyone who hasn't read it, can I recommend the awesome miniseries 'The Secret History of the Authority: Hawksmoor' by Mike Costa and Fiona Staples. Jack's powers have sometimes been underwritten as a sort of free-running plus extras, but Costa finds all kinds of clever new ways for Jack's powers to manifest, and makes them poetic and interesting again. The story really does flesh out Jack's backstory, and the artwork is beautiful (Staples was nominated for an Eisner this year for 'North 40').

Um... how were the people affected by the effects of the city standing upright like the ZeoUltraZord?

I'm not sure. Hawksmoor did once tell two building not to care the people inside and change form to save the falling Swift. The Authorities can be a bunch of jerks sometimes...a lot of times...=_=

Superman would not approve. Do these guys care if it was one of their own but not when it comes to others? Heck, a giant city fighting againist a alien seem like from Watchmen, only with the aliens beign defeated while the entire city still dies.

I didn't read the giant city's part. For saving Swift's part, she was still hurt badly due to the impact, but survived. I didn't remember seeing people fall out of building though.
The Authorities' moral code is pretty low. So even I like them I don't really consider them as totally good guys. But considering their background, it's not surprising they would choose a violent way. It's controversial but still in character. Hawksmoor's own series is actually less violent than others.

It would certainly be a very useful ability if you happened to be a private detective. The downside, though, is the 'can't leave the city' aspect; that would drive me nuts.

I've been wondering whether he could hold up in Central Park or some large parks like that.

As I understand it, any place inside the city is fine, since he requires the pollution and chemical impurities inherent in a modern city environment to survive. A park within the city would probably be fine, although he might possibly develop allergies or something.

Poor guy just can't have a nice date.

Oh, sure he can, as long as the date involves, say, going to the movies or taking her dancing or something. A long drive in the countryside is right out - it stops being romantic the moment one person starts going into cardiac arrest from lack of smog.
