30 Days of Scans Day 8 - Least Favorite Female Character

So I had trouble picking between two characters--Menace or Carlie Cooper, both from the Brand New Day of Amazing Spider-Man. With the exception of maybe Mr. Negative, all the new characters have been horrible--from the racist Norah to the psychotic Michelle--but Carlie and Menace have definitely been pushed onto the reader the most.

Menace  I found largely annoying because it was yet another example of a crappy new BND villain and they attempted to try to do another "Goblin mystery" that just fell flat on its face--with the big reveal being Lily Hollister, Harry's new girlfriend.

Of course, then they had to go along and pull this stunt:



That's right. Now she's carrying Norman Osborn's baby. This is so bad I don't know if it's self-parody of Norman being the "Dirty old man with a thing for blondes" trope. 

Seriously...




Of course, then there's Carlie Cooper. She's being set up as the new love interest for Peter Parker (she was already on the cover of the "Spidey's greatest loves" one-shot along with Marty Jane, Gwen and Black Cat). They've gone to great lengths to set her up as the ideal mate for Spidey and how perfect she is for him that it's nauseating.  Just look at this page:

I think that she's giving birth in the next arc of Spider-Man once OMIT ends. In the Origin of the Species arc for some reason or another (I think they were hired by Doc Ock or something) most of Spider-Man's villains who were revisited during the Gauntlet have decided they want the goblin spawn.

So Spider-Man and Harry team up to protect the kid because it turns out to be his kid after all.

I really don't think Carlie is that bad. Creators name characters after friends and family all the time, the only reason it's a point of contention is because of the shrill rage towards BND, which is mostly misplaced.

Can't stand Norah, however, I'll give you that.

If OMD didn't happen she would have no reason to exist because the whole point of her character is for Peter to date.

Honestly, my main issue is that she's an even more boring version of Gwen Stacy. She's bland, utterly lacking in personality, just like Gwen and seems to be written as your typical version of a blank page that boys can draw all their wet fantasies upon.

You know, good looking, but not so much that it becomes threatening, sweet, innocent, doesn't get in the way of your hobbies/Job, doesn't nag, is so totally understanding of everything that it becomes sickening.

She's basically the same type of char that Gwen Stacy was, utterly forgettable, except for how the reader can paint their own perfect girlfriend on her. And serving no plot in the story, except as the male character's love interest/best friend who'll become love interest.

I find it hilarious that anyone uses the word shrill thinking it reflects on anything other than themselves.

I also enjoyed the doubling down on "you're not really angry about the thing you're angry about".

Yeah, I'll bite. Most complaint comes across as something that if it were spoken would be angry, high-pitched and piercing and probably degenerate it rambling very quickly.

And if you're trying to tell me people should be genuinely angry that Carlie (who wasn't even created by Queseda) share's Queseda's daughters name? Wow. That just shows people aren't looking at the stories and they actively are dismissing everything to with BND simply because of the awful OMD and the removal of the Spider-Marriage.

So Peter parker was Spider-man and he was married to Mary jane but she was boring and dumb but he couldn't divorce her cause he's too good a guy (DIVORCE IS BAD...MMKAY lol south park) so he got a good chance when his aunt was shot and the devil said he could fix it for his marriage and peter said okay and things got all different.

In the new world everything is better cause harry is alive and friends with peter but peter isn't married (old people get married duh not like JACOB TEAM JACOB) so he goes and sees lots of girls like Black cat and this one girl who gets angry and then he dates Ryoko from tenchi. But then he meets the perfect girl.

She's real smart and she wears glasses and she's nice and she understands peter ( not like MJ UH) and they are gonna get married but that happens later (lol spooilers) and then Peter has to deal with Norman who gets this blond girl pregnant ( cause norman liked gwen it fits, it's like poetry it rhymes).

But what happened with mj? Well..

Having looked at the upper drawing I must note that if that was a deliberate attempt at Nightmare Fuel it was trying way too hard. It looks ridiculous and like a bad combination of 90s Anti-Hero drawings with Hellboy after a drunken bender near the pool from Ranma. And Rule 63 pregnant Hellboy is just a "Whatchu smoking" thing as opposed to a "ZOMG NIGHTMARES" thing.

That said.....Carlie Cooper's just a Gwen Stacy knockoff with less personality than other Spider-Girlfriends and insofar as Menace is concerned I didn't know about this particular character and having found out about it, my response is "Meh, WTFever why am I supposed to care?".

I said it once and I'll say it again..so fucking..SO FUCKING tired of the Norman Osborne sleeping with the g/f of Peter and Harry and impregnating them shit...so tired to the point that not only do I want OMD to be noneexistant, but now that's not enough, I want Sins Past to be nothing more than a bad dream. Someday when someone at Marvel wants to publish Spider-Man again, and not his devil-worshipping alternate-reality doppelganger, this will be so.

Honestly, at this point, wouldn't it be shorter to simply name the female supporting characters in Spider-Man that aren't either post-BND characters that were flawed from the get-go, or pre-BND characters that were utterly screwed with? I mean characters that have made more than cameo appearances. (Even Aunt May did a face-heel turn, although she got better, apparently.)

I haven't really encountered Carlie before, but judging from this sample, I'm not sure I'd put the blame for things on HER. I mean, she IS being nice and understanding, and it really is kinda a nice change of pace to have someone just say 'it's cool, no biggie' when Peter has to bow out for Spidey-related business, instead of getting mad and yelling at him like everyone seems to do in those situations. The problem comes with the fact that this nice character is being pounded down our throats with Petey's 'we have so much in common!' monologue. Yeah, we GET it, Parker; enough. If that little train of thought had been cut off at 'making my excuses FOR me', it would have read much better - as it is, it reads like the beginnings of a fanfic rant.

Thing is, we've already had MJ who used to make excuses for Peter all the time, and seriously helped him out more times than not. Same for aunt May when she found out. But yet when Carlie does this, it's treated as if it's a first for Peter, as if he's never had someone do something like that for him before

Well, yeah; that's what I'm saying. It's one thing to have him date a nice character who lets him off the hook for these sorts of things, it's another to treat the situation like it is completely unique and a Sign That They Are Meant To Be Together. There are plenty of nice girls out there, and Peter happens to have met another one of them - she doesn't have to be treated like she's some sort of divine romantic being.
