Cyclops falls in love with Madelyne Pryor and marries her.

They later have a son.

Then Jean returns, and Scott's out the door.

Later he marries Jean (the narrator is Xavier).

But once again, Scott can't stay faithful for long.

Never has one image summed up a character as much as this one from Todd Nauck's has.

That is totally one of my favorite pieces of fanart.

I sort of like Emma/Scott, but I also sort of want Emma to get out before Scott breaks her heart.

before the writers screw him up you mean. Not one of those breakups have made sense with previous characterization IMO. Totally editiorially forced and not even slightly organic.

My friend likes his movie counterpart. The moment I knew about his love history, I gave up on introducing her into comics...

You forgot how under Scott's tenure as head of the institute it has become more insular, xenophobic, isolated from and militaristic towards from the world their mission statement suposedly they want acceptanceand integrate into.

Also Alex trying to mack Mady when Cyke went back to Jean.

But yeah Scott's a douche, actually both Summers brother's are douches, Cable hasn't been kind to the women in his life either... must be something in the blood.

Corsair seems to have been a fine fellow, though. At least to his lovers... The whole 'being a space pirate and sort of orphaning the boys' thing is a bit of a mark against him.

Yea this and the way he went out in X-Men 3 have made me like Scott less and less. He may be a strong leader but as a man...wow. He's worthy of being one of the losers on a talk show.

And this is the sort of character I could get behind- I love flawed characters and ships that are bad for everyone involved- if they'd just present his flaws as flaws. Instead they have him do all this and still seem to expect me to buy him as the clean cut guy he used to be, and I can't do that.

I think American entertainment in general could use a good long look at its morals. I'm not talking about gratuitous sex and violence - those can at least be regarded as over the top and foolish. But there is a lot of behavior in comic books, television, and movies that is downright immoral but which is constantly presented as morally justified by the writers and creative teams.

Immoral

Scott Summers is a very interesting character(at least during Morrison's run). I never thought I would say that about the douchebag from the X-men cartoons and the stubbly douchebag from the X-men movies, but I find him incredibly fascinating in New X-men. The way his one-dimensional battle mindset is played for "icy cold zen lunacy", the charmardie between him and Hank/Logan, becoming more and more cold towards Jean(even though he always loves her) and he tries to take a step out of the "boy scout" handle he's been struck with. Just like the line in the post above where Emma tells him to stop being such an old superhero, "But I've never been allowed to be anything else..."

Scott's visor and Emma's diamond form are perfect metaphors for who they are; flawed people who hold everything back so they won't get hurt. Scott/Emma were a very intersting couple for awhile until Emma lost all her wit and is now simply Scott's telepathic bitch. Take out the occasional "Darling" and you could just replace Jean in the role.

Agreed, to be fair I am reading Astonishing for the real Emma. That being said you shouldn't blame Emma's lack of characterisation on Cyke when Fraction has to take a lot of the blame as well.

Personally I can watch Scott get punched in the stomach for hours. And if anything will turn a devoted housewife into a Goblin-banging witch, its being dumped for your identical twin/cell donor/self/whatever.

You go Madelyne Pryor. You go hard. Years later she'd get her revenge at Seattle Grace. -icons-

Yeah, motto.

The Scott I liked was the one who was still trying to overcome his limits with Jean. A guy who was a competent leader who had trouble expressing his emotions or letting his guard down, but was still a decent person. The guy who was so bent out of shape from the death of his lady love that he went on walkabout.

That dude, I really miss. The guy shagging the white queen? Not so much.

But the only thing I could think of during the wedding? Corsair wearing his headband with a suit. And Kitty wearing a headband. Holy blasted 80s hair.

Man, that scene was just poorly written all around.

Madelyne: "Who was that on the phone, Scott honey?"

Scott: "Oh, that was the execs at Marvel. They want to shack me up with Jean and write you out of the story, so I'm going to drop everything and come running to see her again without telling you why, even though I have no reason keep it from you since wanting to see one of my dearest friends who I thought was dead is really quite understandable!"

Madelyne: "I understand, dear. And for my part I'm going to say that you can't ever come back if you leave, despite the fact that I have absolutely no idea why you want to leave in the first place, and there is no indication whatsoever that we've been fighting or that I should be afraid that you're leaving me, making my sudden ultimatum completely nonsensical!"

Scott: "Aw, thanks honey, you're the best."

So, did Madelyne and Scott get divorced before he and Jean got married?

Never cared much for Jean, anyway. Definitely prefer Scott x Emma.

Of course, with that said, I'm more a fan of Cyclops, leader of the X-Men than I am Scott Summers, failed romantic.

Most of my comic experience with Scott lies in Astonishing X-Men and up, though, and I've enjoyed him and Emma there.

On a related note, pity it looks like he won't be in Marvel vs. Capcom 3. At the very least, even if you didn't like him, you could beat him up.

Cheating on one's wife is bad. HORRIBLE.

That's part of why I like Cyclops. He's NOT a dang "boy scout" and he's "not a role model." He's a messed up guy with the weight of the world on his shoulders, the fate of a species on his conscience and death cannon barely contained by a pair of glasses.

He's interesting.

Which is more than one can say about most characters.
