This guy makes me want to buy Bendis*:

*To be fair, I actually really like some of Bendis's stuff and he and I seem to have similar tastes in characters. So maybe this guy just makes me want to buy more Bendis than I otherwise would.

He.. kind of fluctuates, I think. His DD stuff was top notch, but did you see the Cabal one-shot? UGH.

Maleev's work on Daredevil was amazing - one of the great collaborations.

I've always thought he was stunning at drawing pin-ups and covers, but his sequential have always struck me as stiff and lifeless, like they're copied from photos of his friends striking poses rather than characters naturally behaving like people. Tim Bradstreet does the exact same thing, which is why I think we almost never see him do anything other than covers.

The finished product is nice, but these definitely look like they were from photo references. The contrast and lifelike accuracy give it away.

For me, it's just something noticeable that takes me out of enjoying the art and story. I never really noticed it myself until I had an art teacher go on a rant about photo sources once.

They were.

In the credits for Spider-Woman, Jolynn Carpenter is listed as the model for Jessica Drew.

I can't stand maleev's work

He looks as if he's one with a photoshop programme - takes pictures, runs em through and hey presto! Art work.

I can see how the sketchy, unfinished deconstructed style might work for Daredevil, but for all the comics he's done (The Cabal, where Namor looked like well... Bendis), Spiderwoman at all, he gets a side eye from me.

The work doesn't appear to be copied from photographs. Rather, the work appears to be clear photomanipulation. In other words, he digitally paints on top of photo files.

I have to admit, I really adored SCARLET #1, and I've played with similar (although less sophisticated versions of these) processes. I like it okay, but pound for pound, he's not a cartoonist to me, he's a director and a photographer.

Not that he is "bad" for that, just...I dunno, ignore me.

I gotta say, it was Alex Maleev and David Mack's art that kept me from getting into Daredevil. I just could get myself to like or at least look past it to appreciate the narrative.

But that's what i love about this 30 days of scans event is that you see people with completely different tastes than you.

I love his artwork. I got commission work from him this weekend at Fan Expo and it's breathtaking. Haters gonna hate.
